The study of interfaces is one of the oldest areas of research in materials science. The presence of grain boundaries in materials has long been recognized, as has its crucial role in determining mechanical properties. Another long-recognized concept is that the properties of a surface are quite different from those of the bulk. In recent years, researchers have been able to study these interfaces, both internal and external, with a detail not before possible. These advances have stemmed from the ability to obtain atomic resolution images of interfaces, to measure accurate chemical compositions of interfaces, and to model these interfaces and their properties. This volume goes a step further, beyond structural and chemical studies, to explore how all of this information can be used to engineer interfaces for improved properties and overall improved material performance. Significant attention is given to the crystallographic nature of grain boundaries and interfaces, and the relationship between this nature and the performance of a material. The versatility of electron back-scattering pattern analysis (EBSP) in solving a number of interface-related problems is also featured.

The 55 papers in this collection from the April 2004 symposium study processing methods for nanostructured materials, internal stress and the physics of strengthening mechanisms at the nanoscale, and the mechanical properties of nanoscale materials. Each of the six parts presents experimental contributions first, followed by papers describing related modeling and simulation. Topics include the effect of gold films electrodeposited on nickel substrates, microstructural refinement in copper solid solutions by machining, the synthesis of zeolite as ordered multi-crystal arrays, the elevated temperature mechanical properties of devitrified metallic glass, and improved fracture toughness in advanced nanocrystalline ceramic composites. This book celebrates 20 years of MRS symposia on the topic of amorphous silicon. Contributors showed that the simplified theories developed to explain the limited experimental information available in the early eighties have spurred more sophisticated experimentation - either refining the early understanding or making it irrelevant. The differences of opinion that continue to exist and emerge are probably the hallmark of the amazing vitality of this field. Applications range from 'mature' thin-film transistors, solar cells and image sensors, to the 'emerging' possibility of erbium-doped nanocrystalline silicon-based materials for lasers and amorphous silicon quantum dots for luminescent devices. The book discusses material characterization, growth processes and devices. Each chapter is further subdivided into sections that group papers around common themes. Topics include: nanomaterials; electronic structure; metastable effects; understanding of growth processes; laser-induced crystallization; metal-induced crystallization; other growth techniques; newer devices; solar cells and thin-film transistors.
