Economists wish to compare prices, real income, and output across countries and regions for many purposes. In the past, such comparisons were made in nominal terms, or by using exchange rates across countries, ignoring differences in price levels and thus distorting the results. Great progress has been made in interspatial comparisons in the past thirty years, but descriptions and discussions of the new measures have been scattered in unpublished or inaccessible papers. International and Interarea Comparisons of Income, Output, and Prices includes discussions of developments in the United Nations International Comparison Program, the largest effort in this field, and in the ICOP program on the production side, including efforts in both to extend the comparisons to the formerly planned economies. Other papers in this volume explore new programs on interspatial comparisons within the United States. There are also theoretical papers on how interspatial comparisons should be made and several examples of uses of such comparisons.

Estimating Real Production And Expenditures Across Nations written by and has been published by World Bank Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Gross domestic product categories.

"From its inception, the Penn World Tables (PWT), building on the International Comparisons Program (ICP) of the United Nations, has sought to compare the standard of living of individuals in different countries. That is, the term "real GDP per capita" as reported in the PWT is intended to represent the ability to purchase goods and services by a representative agent in the economy. The same is true of benchmark comparisons as published by the United Nations, Eurostat, or OECD. But this expenditure-side interpretation of real GDP is quite different from the uses to which benchmark ICP and PWT data are frequently applied, such as in growth regressions, where "real GDP" is intended to reflect the production side of the economy. In this paper the authors propose a new approach to international comparisons of real GDP measured from the output side. They modify the traditional Gary-Khamis system, which measures real GDP from the expenditure side using real domestic expenditure, to include differences in the terms of trade between countries. The analysis shows that this system has a strictly positive solution under mild assumptions. On the basis of a set of domestic final output, import, and export prices and values for 151 countries in 1996, differences between real GDP measured from the expenditure and output side can be substantial, especially for small open economies."

Price Index Numbers written by Naohito Abe and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-14 with Business & Economics categories.

This textbook offers a comprehensive yet concise introduction to the theory behind price indices, covering the basics, historical background, necessary mathematical foundations, and contemporary cutting-edge theories. For those looking to study price indices, the most commonly used resources have traditionally been the comprehensive but voluminous CPI Manual, which is aimed at statistical practitioners, or Balk (2008), which, while covering theory concisely, requires advanced mathematical skills. This book is distinctive in that it (1) places emphasis on the relationship between price indices and economic theory, (2) presents cutting-edge methods and topics such as multilateral indices using scanner data and price measurement using Engel curves, and (3) provides explanations of essential mathematical techniques like functional equations, thus enabling self-study from the fundamentals to the forefront of modern index number theory.

This manual sets out the full methodology of producing PPPs within the ‘Eurostat-OECD PPP Programme’ – a programme in which the Eurostat and OECD have been working together in producing and publishing Purchasing Power Parities (PPPs) for their respective member countries. PPPs are essential tools for the comparison of price and volume levels of GDP and other indicators. This manual describes the organisation of the work and the data collection, validation and calculation methods as applied for the reference year 2022. It updates the previous edition published in 2012. The aim of the manual is: (i) to provide methodological guidelines on PPPs to those directly engaged in the programme, i.e. to practitioners in Eurostat, the OECD and National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) of participating countries; (ii), to advise PPPs users – policymakers, journalists, academics, researchers – on the use and interpretation of programme comparison results; and (iii) to provide a single point of reference on the Eurostat-OECD PPP Programme, accessible to teachers, students and the general public interested in PPPs and related statistics.

Agricultural Productivity written by Virgil Ball and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Business & Economics categories.

Agricultural Productivity: Measurement and Sources of Growth addresses measurement issues and techniques in agricultural productivity analysis, applying those techniques to recently published data sets for American agriculture. The data sets are used to estimate and explain state level productivity and efficiency differences, and to test different approaches to productivity measurement. The rise in agricultural productivity is the single most important source of economic growth in the U.S. farm sector, and the rate of productivity growth is estimated to be higher in agriculture than in the non-farm sector. It is important to understand productivity sources and to measure its growth properly, including the effects of environmental externalities. Both the methods and the data can be accessed by economists at the state level to conduct analyses for their own states. In a sense, although not explicitly, the book provides a guide to using the productivity data available on the website of the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Economic Research Service. It should be of interest to a broad spectrum of professionals in academia, the government, and the private sector.
