Matière complémentaire du droit des obligations, le droit des assurances en emprunte en partie les règles, mais en étend aussi le domaine d'application. En effet, l'assurance jouant un rôle économique et social fondamental dans la société française, le contrat d'assurance est devenu omniprésent, tant dans la vie privée que dans les relations professionnelles. Tenant compte de la division, incontournable, dégagée par la réglementation des assurances, entre les branches assurances de dommages et assurances de personnes, ce manuel traite en première partie du " droit commun du contrat d'assurance ", où sont envisagés, en premier lieu la vie du contrat, puis les droits et obligations des parties par rapport à chaque élément du contrat d'assurance : le risque, la prime et le sinistre. Dans la deuxième partie, sont étudiées les " règles propres à chaque catégorie d'assurance " : de dommages, puis de personnes. L'étude est précédée d'une introduction présentant les spécificités de l'opération d'assurance, la classification des assurances, les règles prudentielles et, enfin, à la différence du contrat de droit commun, les nombreux intervenants au contrat d'assurance. Cet ouvrage poursuit un objectif pédagogique mais aussi, et surtout, doctrinal il présente certes le régime juridique de la matière, mais il fait aussi état des différentes conceptions doctrinales tout en proposant, lorsque cela semble nécessaire, une nouvelle conception. II s'adresse ainsi, non seulement aux étudiants et professionnels du droit néophytes en droit des assurances, mais aussi aux acteurs plus avertis. Cette seconde édition est à jour des tout derniers textes (à jour de la réforme du droit des obligations issue de l'ordonnance n° 2016-131 du 10 février et entrée en vigueur le 1er octobre 2016) ou projets, et de la jurisprudence la plus récente.
