Introduction To Chinese Aesthetics written by Chunshi Yang and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-29 with Philosophy categories.

The purpose of this book is to systematize traditional Chinese aesthetic thought, reveal its internal logic, and carry out a dialogue with modern Western aesthetics, so as to rebuild the Chinese aesthetic system. Chinese aesthetics embodies the concept of inter-subjectivity, which has modern significance. It is based on the idea of unity between heaven and humanity, viewing aesthetic as the communication between the self-subject and the world-subject, in contrast to the Western aesthetic epistemology that regards aesthetic as the sensory perception of the subject toward the object. Additionally, the methodology of intuitive perception is another characteristic of Chinese aesthetics that holds modern significance. Chinese aesthetics emphasizes the emotionality of aesthetics from the perspective of value theory, distinguishing itself from the epistemological tradition of Western aesthetics. It differs from Western consciousness aesthetics, as it embodies corporeality, representing aesthetics of experience that integrates body and mind. It posits that aesthetic is not purely a spiritual activity, nor is it a form of 'contemplation,' but rather an experience that integrates body and mind, and an idealized way of life. Therefore, aesthetic can nurture temperament and poeticize life. Furthermore, in Chinese aesthetics, it is emphasized that aesthetics serves as a mode of experiencing the Way. The Way is discovered through aesthetic intuition and emotional experiences, and it is actualized through imagery, thereby laying the groundwork for an aesthetic phenomenology. The reinterpretation and reconstruction of Chinese aesthetics is a product of the dialogue between Chinese and Western aesthetics. Since its publication, this book has garnered widespread attention and acclaim from the academic community in China. It embodies professor Yang's Transcendental Aesthetic view with Inter-subjectivity, bridging ancient and modern perspectives, and fostering communication between Chinese and Western Aesthetics.

Philosophy Of Chinese Art written by Zhu Zhirong and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-16 with Philosophy categories.

This title provides a systematic examination of the philosophy of Chinese art, exploring the peculiarity of artistic forms and distinctive conceptions and artistic principles of Chinese art which are grounded in the life awareness of the ancient Chinese and interconnect with the Chinese philosophy of life. Synthesizing Chinese theories of art with Western philosophical systems, the book is organized into five parts: (1) the subject, the actor who creates, appreciates, and criticizes artistic works; (2) ontological aspects, that is, the artwork per se and the dynamic process of creation; (3) aesthetic traits, the organic whole constituted by rhythm, meter, the principle of harmony, and space-time awareness; (4) artistic representation, which is manifested in the rhythm of vital energy, momentum of genre, vigour of style, and taste and inclination; and (5) the evolution of Chinese art. Based on this structural thread, the author looks into the interwoven relationship between the philosophy of Chinese art and ancient Chinese thought in terms of the spirit of life, nature–human relations, and ontological awareness of human-centredness. The book will appeal to scholars, students, and general readers interested in aesthetics, art theory, art philosophy, Chinese art, and ancient Chinese culture.

Chinese Revolutionary Cinema written by Jessica Ka Yee Chan and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-21 with Performing Arts categories.

Engaging with fiction films devoted to heroic tales from the decade and a half between 1949 and 1966, this book reconceives state propaganda as aesthetic experiments that not only radically transformed acting, cinematography and screenwriting in socialist China, but also articulated a new socialist film theory and criticism. Rooted in the interwar avant-garde and commercial cinema, Chinese revolutionary cinema, as a state cinema for the newly established People's Republic, adapted Chinese literature for the screen, incorporated Hollywood narration, appropriated Soviet montage theory and orchestrated a new, glamorous, socialist star culture. In the wake of decolonisation, Chinese film journals were quick to project and disseminate the country's redefined self-image to Asia, Africa and Latin America as they helped to create an alternative vision of modernity and internationalism. Revealing the historical contingency of the term 'propaganda', Chan uncovers the visual, aural, kinaesthetic, sexual and ideological dynamics that gave rise to a new aesthetic of revolutionary heroism in world cinema. Based on extensive archival research, this book's focus on the distinctive rhetoric of post-war socialist China will be of value to East Asian Cinema scholars, Chinese Studies academics and those interested in the history of twentieth-century socialist culture.

"This singular work presents the most comprehensive and nuanced study available in any Western language of Chinese aesthetic thought and practice during the Six Dynasties (A.D. 220-589). Despite a succession of dynastic and social upheavals, the literati preoccupied themselves with both the sensuous and the transcendent and strove for cultural dominance. By the end of the sixth century, their reflections would evolve into a sophisticated system of aesthetic discourse characterized by its own rhetoric and concepts." "Chinese Aesthetics will fill a gap in Western sinological studies of the period. It will appeal to scholars and students in premodern Chinese literary studies, comparative aesthetics, and cultural studies and will be a welcome reference to anyone interested in ancient Chinese culture."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. For anyone working in aesthetics interested in understanding the richness of the Chinese aesthetic tradition this handbook is the place to start. Comprised of general introductory overviews, critical reflections and contextual analysis, it covers everything from the origins of aesthetics in China to the role of aesthetics in philosophy today. Beginning in early China (1st millennium BCE), it traces the Chinese aesthetic tradition, exploring the import of the term aesthetics into Chinese thought via Japan around the end of the 19th century. It looks back to early practices of art and craftsmanship, showing how the history of Chinese thought provides a multitude of artefacts and texts that give rise to a wide range of aesthetic creations and notions. Introducing various perspectives on traditional arts in China, including painting, ceramics, calligraphy, poetry, music and theatre, it explores those aesthetic traditions not included in “canonic” art forms, such as martial arts, rock gardening, and ritual performance. Written by Chinese, European, and American theoreticians and practitioners, this authoritative research resource enhances contemporary aesthetics by revealing the possibilities of a Chinese philosophy of art.
