This book provides a comprehensive overview of the most important and frequently considered optimization problems concerning cutting and packing. Based on appropriate modeling approaches for the problems considered, it offers an introduction to the related solution methods. It also addresses aspects like performance results for heuristic algorithms and bounds of the optimal value, as well as the packability of a given set of objects within a predefined container. The problems discussed arise in a wide variety of different fields of application and research, and as such, the fundamental knowledge presented in this book make it a valuable resource for students, practitioners, and researchers who are interested in dealing with such tasks.

Random Sequential Packing Of Cubes written by Mathieu Dutour Sikiri? and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Mathematics categories.

In this volume very simplified models are introduced to understand the random sequential packing models mathematically. The 1-dimensional model is sometimes called the Parking Problem, which is known by the pioneering works by Flory (1939), Renyi (1958), Dvoretzky and Robbins (1962). To obtain a 1-dimensional packing density, distribution of the minimum of gaps, etc., the classical analysis has to be studied. The packing density of the general multi-dimensional random sequential packing of cubes (hypercubes) makes a well-known unsolved problem. The experimental analysis is usually applied to the problem. This book introduces simplified multi-dimensional models of cubes and torus, which keep the character of the original general model, and introduces a combinatorial analysis for combinatorial modelings.

A Discrete Hilbert Transform With Circle Packings written by Dominik Volland and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-01 with Mathematics categories.

Dominik Volland studies the construction of a discrete counterpart to the Hilbert transform in the realm of a nonlinear discrete complex analysis given by circle packings. The Hilbert transform is closely related to Riemann-Hilbert problems which have been studied in the framework of circle packings by E. Wegert and co-workers since 2009. The author demonstrates that the discrete Hilbert transform is well-defined in this framework by proving a conjecture on discrete problems formulated by Wegert. Moreover, he illustrates its properties by carefully chosen numerical examples.

New Approaches To Circle Packing In A Square written by Péter Gábor Szabó and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-05-31 with Mathematics categories.

In one sense, the problem of finding the densest packing of congruent circles in a square is easy to understand. But on closer inspection, this problem reveals itself to be an interesting challenge of discrete and computational geometry with all its surprising structural forms and regularities. This book summarizes results achieved in solving the circle packing problem over the past few years, providing the reader with a comprehensive view of both theoretical and computational achievements. Typically illustrations of problem solutions are shown, elegantly displaying the results obtained. Beyond the theoretically challenging character of the problem, the solution methods developed in the book also have many practical applications. Since the codes can be worked with directly, they will enable the reader to improve on them and solve problem instances that still remain challenging, or to use them as a starting point for solving related application problems.

Computational and theoretical open problems in optimization, computational geometry, data science, logistics, statistics, supply chain modeling, and data analysis are examined in this book. Each contribution provides the fundamentals needed to fully comprehend the impact of individual problems. Current theoretical, algorithmic, and practical methods used to circumvent each problem are provided to stimulate a new effort towards innovative and efficient solutions. Aimed towards graduate students and researchers in mathematics, optimization, operations research, quantitative logistics, data analysis, and statistics, this book provides a broad comprehensive approach to understanding the significance of specific challenging or open problems within each discipline. The contributions contained in this book are based on lectures focused on “Challenges and Open Problems in Optimization and Data Science” presented at the Deucalion Summer Institute for Advanced Studies in Optimization, Mathematics, and Data Science in August 2016.

This multi-volume set deals with Teichmuller theory in the broadest sense, namely, as the study of moduli space of geometric structures on surfaces, with methods inspired or adapted from those of classical Teichmuller theory. The aim is to give a complete panorama of this generalized Teichmuller theory and of its applications in various fields of mathematics. The volumes consist of chapters, each of which is dedicated to a specific topic. The volume has 19 chapters and is divided into four parts: The metric and the analytic theory (uniformization, Weil-Petersson geometry, holomorphic families of Riemann surfaces, infinite-dimensional Teichmuller spaces, cohomology of moduli space, and the intersection theory of moduli space). The group theory (quasi-homomorphisms of mapping class groups, measurable rigidity of mapping class groups, applications to Lefschetz fibrations, affine groups of flat surfaces, braid groups, and Artin groups). Representation spaces and geometric structures (trace coordinates, invariant theory, complex projective structures, circle packings, and moduli spaces of Lorentz manifolds homeomorphic to the product of a surface with the real line). The Grothendieck-Teichmuller theory (dessins d'enfants, Grothendieck's reconstruction principle, and the Teichmuller theory of the solenoid). This handbook is an essential reference for graduate students and researchers interested in Teichmuller theory and its ramifications, in particular for mathematicians working in topology, geometry, algebraic geometry, dynamical systems and complex analysis. The authors are leading experts in the field.

The second edition of this timely, definitive, and popular book continues to pursue the question: what is the most efficient way to pack a large number of equal spheres in n-dimensional Euclidean space? The authors also continue to examine related problems such as the kissing number problem, the covering problem, the quantizing problem, and the classification of lattices and quadratic forms. Like the first edition, the second edition describes the applications of these questions to other areas of mathematics and science such as number theory, coding theory, group theory, analog-to-digital conversion and data compression, n-dimensional crystallography, and dual theory and superstring theory in physics. Results as of 1992 have been added to the text, and the extensive bibliography - itself a contribution to the field - is supplemented with approximately 450 new entries.
