In The Tradition Of Thurston written by Ken’ichi Ohshika and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-07 with Mathematics categories.

This book consists of 16 surveys on Thurston's work and its later development. The authors are mathematicians who were strongly influenced by Thurston's publications and ideas. The subjects discussed include, among others, knot theory, the topology of 3-manifolds, circle packings, complex projective structures, hyperbolic geometry, Kleinian groups, foliations, mapping class groups, Teichmüller theory, anti-de Sitter geometry, and co-Minkowski geometry. The book is addressed to researchers and students who want to learn about Thurston’s wide-ranging mathematical ideas and their impact. At the same time, it is a tribute to Thurston, one of the greatest geometers of all time, whose work extended over many fields in mathematics and who had a unique way of perceiving forms and patterns, and of communicating and writing mathematics.

Mathematical Visualization aims at an abstract framework for fundamen tal objects appearing in visualization and at the application of the manifold visualization techniques to problems in geometry, topology and numerical mathematics. The articles in this volume report on new research results in this field, on the development of software and educational material and on mathematical applications. The book grew out of the third international workshop "Visualization and Mathematics", which was held from May 22-25, 2002 in Berlin (Germany). The workshop was funded by the DFG-Sonderforschungsbereich 288 "Dif ferential Geometry and Quantum Physics" at Technische Universitat Berlin and supported by the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and the DFG research cen ter "Mathematics for Key Technologies" (FZT 86) in Berlin. Five keynote lectures, eight invited presentations and several contributed talks created a stimulating atmosphere with many scientific discussions. The themes of this book cover important recent developments in the fol lowing fields: - Geometry and Combinatorics of Meshes - Discrete Vector Fields and Topology - Geometric Modelling - Image Based Visualization - Software Environments and Applications - Education and Communication We hope that the research articles of this book will stimulate the readers' own work and will further strenghten the development of the field of Mathe matical Visualization. VI Preface We appreciate the thorough work of the authors and reviewers on each of the individual articles, and we thank you all.

The French expression “dessins d'enfants” means children's drawings. This term was coined by the great French mathematician Alexandre Grothendieck in order to denominate a method of pictorial representation of some highly interesting classes of polynomials and rational functions. The polynomials studied in this book take their origin in number theory. The authors show how, by drawing simple pictures, one can prove some long-standing conjectures and formulate new ones. The theory presented here touches upon many different fields of mathematics. The major part of the book is quite elementary and is easily accessible to an undergraduate student. The less elementary parts, such as Galois theory or group representations and their characters, would need a more profound knowledge of mathematics. The reader may either take the basic facts of these theories for granted or use our book as a motivation and a first approach to these subjects.

Complex Dynamics written by Robert L. Devaney and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Mathematics categories.

Chaotic behavior of (even the simplest) iterations of polynomial maps of the complex plane was known for almost one hundred years due to the pioneering work of Farou, Julia, and their contemporaries. However, it was only twenty-five years ago that the first computer generated images illustrating properties of iterations of quadratic maps appeared. These images of the so-called Mandelbrot and Julia sets immediately resulted in a strong resurgence of interest in complex dynamics. The present volume, based on the talks at the conference commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the appearance of Mandelbrot sets, provides a panorama of current research in this truly fascinating area of mathematics.

This work is a research-level monograph whose goal is to develop a general combination, decomposition, and structure theory for branched coverings of the two-sphere to itself, regarded as the combinatorial and topological objects which arise in the classification of certain holomorphic dynamical systems on the Riemann sphere. It is intended for researchers interested in the classification of those complex one-dimensional dynamical systems which are in some loose sense tame. The program is motivated by the dictionary between the theories of iterated rational maps and Kleinian groups.

The main objective of this paper is to prove the monodromy conjecture for the local Igusa zeta function of a quasi-ordinary polynomial of arbitrary dimension defined over a number field. In order to do it, we compute the local Denef-Loeser motivic zeta function $Z_{\text{DL}}(h,T)$ of a quasi-ordinary power series $h$ of arbitrary dimension over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero from its characteristic exponents without using embedded resolution of singularities. This allows us to effectively represent $Z_{\text{DL}}(h,T)=P(T)/Q(T)$ such that almost all the candidate poles given by $Q(T)$ are poles. Anyway, these candidate poles give eigenvalues of the monodromy action on the complex $R\psi_h$ of nearby cycles on $h^{-1}(0).$ In particular we prove in this case the monodromy conjecture made by Denef-Loeser for the local motivic zeta function and the local topological zeta function. As a consequence, if $h$ is a quasi-ordinary polynomial defined over a number field we prove the Igusa monodromy conjecture for its local Igusa zeta function.

Measure Theoretic Laws For Lim Sup Sets written by Victor Beresnevich Detta Dickinson Sanju Velani and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12-01 with Diophantine approximation categories.

Given a compact metric space $(\Omega,d)$ equipped with a non-atomic, probability measure $m$ and a positive decreasing function $\psi$, we consider a natural class of lim sup subsets $\Lambda(\psi)$ of $\Omega$. The classical lim sup set $W(\psi)$ of `$\psi$-approximable' numbers in the theory of metric Diophantine approximation fall within this class. We establish sufficient conditions (which are also necessary under some natural assumptions) for the $m$-measure of $\Lambda(\psi)$ to be either positive or full in $\Omega$ and for the Hausdorff $f$-measure to be infinite. The classical theorems of Khintchine-Groshev and Jarnik concerning $W(\psi)$ fall into our general framework. The main results provide a unifying treatment of numerous problems in metric Diophantine approximation including those for real, complex and $p$-adic fields associated with both independent and dependent quantities. Applications also include those to Kleinian groups and rational maps. Compared to previous works our framework allows us to successfully remove many unnecessary conditions and strengthen fundamental results such as Jarnik's theorem and the Baker-Schmidt theorem. In particular, the strengthening of Jarnik's theorem opens up the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture for Hausdorff measures.
