This set presents wet lab methods for courses in biophysics or molecular biology. It provides a thorough description of modern experimental and analytical techniques used in biological and biophysical research. The author gives practical, step-by-step guidance on instrumentation and experimental design and includes recipes for common solutions and media, lists of important reagents, and a glossary of biological terms. The manual offers a flexible course plan that permits completion of the labs in either a full term or intensive summer course. Tested in a pedagogical setting, the experiments follow a logical progression beginning with a DNA construct. The book starts with the basics of molecular cloning: amplifying and purifying plasmid, plasmid mapping, and using restriction enzymes. Later experiments deal with more advanced, emerging techniques, such as the synthesis and characterization of quantum dots and gold nanoparticles, protein crystallization, and spectroscopic techniques.

This textbook provides the knowledge and skills needed for thorough understanding of the most important methods and ways of thinking in experimental physics. The reader learns to design, assemble, and debug apparatus, to use it to take meaningful data, and to think carefully about the story told by the data. Key Features: Efficiently helps students grow into independent experimentalists through a combination of structured yet thought-provoking and challenging exercises, student-designed experiments, and guided but open-ended exploration. Provides solid coverage of fundamental background information, explained clearly for undergraduates, such as ground loops, optical alignment techniques, scientific communication, and data acquisition using LabVIEW, Python, or Arduino. Features carefully designed lab experiences to teach fundamentals, including analog electronics and low noise measurements, digital electronics, microcontrollers, FPGAs, computer interfacing, optics, vacuum techniques, and particle detection methods. Offers a broad range of advanced experiments for each major area of physics, from condensed matter to particle physics. Also provides clear guidance for student development of projects not included here. Provides a detailed Instructor’s Manual for every lab, so that the instructor can confidently teach labs outside their own research area.

The present manual contains a collection of laboratory instructions used during an international training course on membrane biophysics which was held at Homburg in the fall of 1966. The selection of the topics dealt with in the various chapters depended on the scientific interest of the available teachers and on the availability of the necessary equipment in our laboratories. Thus, the material included in this volume does not add up to a systematic course in membrane biophysics. Instead it represents a more fortuitous collection of laboratory problems. In addition, some authors place more emphasis on teaching the more technical aspects of a method whereas others are primarily concerned with the demonstra tion of a significant biological phenomenon. Nevertheless, in spite of such differences of emphasis and a somewhat haphazard choice of a few methods and phenomena among many others of similar importance, it was felt that the publication of the material is desirable. Since no other laboratory manual exists so far, the present laboratory problems which were tested in actual practice may serve as a useful basis for the shaping of further training courses or for laboratory courses for graduate students in biophysics and physiology. Our thanks are due to the authors and the publisher who were patient and kind enough to cooperate with the editors during the long period between the end of the course and the appearance of the book.

Introductory Experiments on Biomolecules and their Interactions provides a novel approach to teaching biomolecules in the lab. While featuring the requisite fundamentals, it also captures the author’s experience in industry, thus providing unique, up-to-date experiments which take the learning experience one-step further. The text parallels lectures using a standard biochemistry undergraduate text. Unlike most current lab manuals available in the market which simply emphasize an introduction of techniques, this lab manual provides students with opportunities to demonstrate and prove the knowledge and theories they learn from class. Features quantitative analysis of RNA degradation by RNase Contains problem sets, calculations, and references for each lab fully immersing students in the learning process Includes instruction on how to maintain a lab notebook and write a formal lab report Provides hands-on engagement with the four major types of biomolecules and “real-life and better applied examples of molecular interactions
