After a consideration of basic quantum mechanics, this introduction aims at a side by side treatment of fundamental applications of the Schrdinger equation on the one hand and the applications of the path integral on the other. Different from traditional texts and using a systematic perturbation method, the solution of Schrdinger equations includes also those with anharmonic oscillator potentials, periodic potentials, screened Coulomb potentials and a typical singular potential, as well as the investigation of the large order behavior of the perturbation series. On the path integral side, after introduction of the basic ideas, the expansion around classical configurations in Euclidean time, such as instantons, is considered, and the method is applied in particular to anharmonic oscillator and periodic potentials. Numerous other aspects are treated on the way, thus providing the reader an instructive overview over diverse quantum mechanical phenomena, e.g. many other potentials, Green's functions, comparison with WKB, calculation of lifetimes and sojourn times, derivation of generating functions, the Coulomb problem in various coordinates, etc. All calculations are given in detail, so that the reader can follow every step.

This book is a slightly expanded reproduction of the first two chapters (plus Introduction) of my book Perturbation Theory tor Linear Operators, Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften 132, Springer 1980. Ever since, or even before, the publication of the latter, there have been suggestions about separating the first two chapters into a single volume. I have now agreed to follow the suggestions, hoping that it will make the book available to a wider audience. Those two chapters were intended from the outset to be a comprehen sive presentation of those parts of perturbation theory that can be treated without the topological complications of infinite-dimensional spaces. In fact, many essential and. even advanced results in the theory have non trivial contents in finite-dimensional spaces, although one should not forget that some parts of the theory, such as those pertaining to scatter ing. are peculiar to infinite dimensions. I hope that this book may also be used as an introduction to linear algebra. I believe that the analytic approach based on a systematic use of complex functions, by way of the resolvent theory, must have a strong appeal to students of analysis or applied mathematics, who are usually familiar with such analytic tools.

This text on quantum mechanics begins by covering all the main topics of an introduction to the subject. It then concentrates on newer developments. In particular it continues with the perturbative solution of the Schrödinger equation for various potentials and thereafter with the introduction and evaluation of their path integral counterparts. Considerations of the large order behavior of the perturbation expansions show that in most applications these are asymptotic expansions. The parallel consideration of path integrals requires the evaluation of these around periodic classical configurations, the fluctuation equations about which lead back to specific wave equations. The period of the classical configurations is related to temperature, and permits transitions to the thermal domain to be classified as phase transitions. In this second edition of the text important applications and numerous examples have been added. In particular, the chapter on the Coulomb potential has been extended to include an introduction to chemical bonds, the chapter on periodic potentials has been supplemented by a section on the band theory of metals and semiconductors, and in the chapter on large order behavior a section has been added illustrating the success of converging factors in the evaluation of asymptotic expansions. Detailed calculations permit the reader to follow every step.

This book is an extended version of lectures given by the ?rst author in 1995–1996 at the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. We believe that a major part of the book can be regarded as an additional material to the standard course of Hamiltonian mechanics. In comparison with the original Russian 1 version we have included new material, simpli?ed some proofs and corrected m- prints. Hamiltonian equations ?rst appeared in connection with problems of geometric optics and celestial mechanics. Later it became clear that these equations describe a large classof systemsin classical mechanics,physics,chemistry,and otherdomains. Hamiltonian systems and their discrete analogs play a basic role in such problems as rigid body dynamics, geodesics on Riemann surfaces, quasi-classic approximation in quantum mechanics, cosmological models, dynamics of particles in an accel- ator, billiards and other systems with elastic re?ections, many in?nite-dimensional models in mathematical physics, etc. In this book we study Hamiltonian systems assuming that they depend on some parameter (usually?), where for?= 0 the dynamics is in a sense simple (as a rule, integrable). Frequently such a parameter appears naturally. For example, in celestial mechanics it is accepted to take? equal to the ratio: the mass of Jupiter over the mass of the Sun. In other cases it is possible to introduce the small parameter ar- ?cially.
