During two decades encompassing three epochal events - the collapse of European communism in 1989, NATO membership in 1999, and accession to the European Union in 2004 - the legal system of Poland has emerged with remarkable maturity and stability. In an exemplary blend of its democratic heritage from the era between the World Wars, proven effective legislation from the communist era, and the vibrant 1997 Constitution, Polish law dramatically reflects new social, economic and political realities. With eleven lucid chapters written by fifteen academic experts from the Warsaw University School of Law and Administration, each in his or her respective field of law, this deeply informed but succinct and practical volume is the ideal starting point for research whenever a question of Polish law arises. The authors clearly explain the legal concepts, customs and rules surrounding such essential elements as the following:principles and practices of constitutional law;administrative law and procedure;civil procedure;courts and special judicial bodies;judicial review;enforcement of foreign judgments;family, succession and inheritance matters;formation and conduct of corporations and partnerships;contract formation, interpretation and termination; environmental protection;harmonizing Polish economic law with EU standards; competition law and regulatory framework of market processes; special regulation of energy, telecommunications and financial markets; copyrights, patents, utility models and industrial designs; licence agreements;the labour relationship and types of employment contracts; andcriminal law and procedure. Each chapter includes its own detailed bibliography. English-speaking legal practitioners and academics have here an ideal introduction to the basic institutions, principles and rules of Polish law. Encompassing all the major fields of legal practice, Introduction to Polish Law provides an essential understanding of the Polish legal system, so that users can become familiar with law and legal processes in Poland and pursue further research on specific Polish legal matters. Practitioners will find it of great value for both counselling and courtroom use.

This is the first book on the market which concerns integrity of administrative law. The issue is topical both in theory and in practice of this field, however, it has not been the subject of discussion in scientific literature so far. The book is the compilation of authorial views presented by the academics of the Department of Administrative Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. The publication discusses, among others, the following problems: the substance and types of integrity of the Polish administrative law, elements fostering the internal integration of the said law and obstacles to such integration, issues in the borderland of administrative and civil law as well as administrative and criminal law, relationships between administrative law and the law of the European Union and constitutional law, the phenomenon of expansion and withdrawal of administrative law. The book may be of interest to judges of administrative and civil courts, public administration officers, students of law and administration, advocates and attorneys-at-law. “When thinking how to structure the book, we considered whether to prepare it as a monograph about a single topic or about coherent topics pertaining to the monograph as a whole, or – as some of us wished – to compile it as a certain collection of essays with a common theme, though of authorial nature and interrelated to a slightly lesser extent. We agreed on something in between. On the one hand, we wanted to discuss the selected topic as consistently and comprehensively as possible in a dozen or so of publisher’s sheets, leaving room for individual assessment of the situation in Polish administrative law, on the other hand.” Prof. Jan Zimmermann, PhD habil.

“Foundations of Law: The Polish Perspective” covers a range of issues forming the core of academic legal education in Poland. It provides basic knowledge about Polish law and Polish legal culture, and constitutes an innovative introduction to the European approach to the concept of law, legal reasoning, recent challenges and the problems of legal development. “ The book contains nineteen chapters, the aim of each being to give an understandable presentation and discussion of a specific area of law. The early chapters present an overview of the historical foundations of Polish law and the Polish theory and philosophy of law. The following chapters address private, public, criminal and economic law as is applied in Poland. Diagrams have been included to increase clarity of the text and some contributions are supplemented with case studies. Further reading in other languages recommended by the authors of individual chapters will facilitate a more in-depth understanding of Polish law and Polish legal culture as a part of the tradition of civil law, which is currently also a reflection of the legislative activity of the European Union. This publication is the joint work of members of the Faculty of Law and Administration, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań. The Faculty is one of the largest and best law schools in Poland and has been consistently rated as one of the best in the country. The Faculty was established in its original form in 1919, at the same time as the University itself. The Faculty meets the requirements of contemporary trends in higher education by conducting high level research. The academic staff recognize the demands of social processes and seek to create value for society, science, culture and the economy. Consequently, the results of the research conducted at the University at local, international and interdisciplinary level may be applied in practice.
