They are designed simply to indicate the lines along which study is demanded if one is to understand the teachings of the Old Testa ment. NO effort has been made to present an exhaust ive review of the ideas which have been advanced by others in regard to these remarkable books, or to give completeness to the views of the author. Only such points as seem necessary to a correct understanding of the text are presented and these are stated in the briefest form, with such references as may guide the way to further study. If the position here taken seem conservative, it is not because the writer has ignored the later criticism or underestimates its value, but because the newer ideas do not seem to be sufficiently established to demand the abandonment of the older. Great gain has already come from the learned and laborious investigations of the new school of criticism and we hope for still richer fruitage in the future, but the results thus far secured are too vague to become a satisfactory basis for the interpretation of Scripture. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Old Testament, Vol. 1 of 2 But to have done this at all satisfactorily would have entailed lengthened discussions which would have given the book a polemical aspect it was desired to avoid, and have swelled it to an inconvenient bulk. In a few cases where Bleek's decisions appeared most at variance with those of sober and conservative critics, references have been given to works where what is thought to be the sounder view is maintained. But, on the whole, the book has been left to stand on its own merits, and to speak for itself. Thus, it is believed, its real usefulness has been best consulted. The student will be furnished with the data on which Bleek's own conclusions have been based, but he will not be compelled to accept these conclusions as indubitable without further reflection. He may trust to the facts being, on the whole, fairly and impartially stated; but he must not be surprised if in some instances Bleek's deductions from the facts fail to commend themselves to his judgment. He will be careful to distinguish between the phenomena which Bleek brings so clearly before his notice and the explanations of the phenomena he gives. These explanations may be, and sometimes are, precarious, if not erroneous. These, however, which are rather errors of judgment than of principle, are not such as to affect materially the value of the work. Its general spirit or tendency, it is believed, cannot be otherwise than beneficial, or the translation would never have been attempted. Those who have hitherto been strangers to the controversies of the day, and have accepted, without doubt or question, the traditional views of the authorship and composition of the Books of the Old Testament, must be prepared to meet with much that is new, strange, and at first sight even startling, in Bleek's investigations and their results. Excerpt from A General Historico-Critical Introduction to the Old Testament The work of which a translation is now presented to the British Public was the mature production of a theologian distinguished by that vast and varied learning which may be regarded as peculiarly characteristic of the modern German divines, and at the same time. Imbued with that reverence for the Bible as the Word of God, and that lively apprehension of its spiritual truths, which unhappily are too often found wanting in that quarter. I have undertaken, he says in his preface, to write this work from that stand-point which, through God's grace, has been showed to me - from the inward and firm conviction that the Object Of investigation is God's holy word, given to mankind sunk in sin and misery, for the purpose of guiding them in the way of salvation and peace. Vvhosoever has, through the mercy of the Lord, been led so as to have learned to understand at his hand the word of life, and through this has been not only enlightened, but sanctified and blessed, cannot but feel constrained to utter, according to the calling, and in the measure vouchsafed to him by the Lord, a testimony for the grace which has been displayed even unto him. As it is written, I believe therefore I speak, ' so the theologian, the servant of the Church of Jesus Christ, knows that it is impossible to construct a theological science which is not founded on the truth - more particularly on the truth as revealed in the Word and his desire and most zealous endeavour, in keeping with this, is to erect on this basis a living edifice of science, the corner-stone of which shall be that besides which no other can be laid by any man. Such an one knows also that he thus labours not in the service of man, and on a vain and profitless work, but in the service of the Head of the Church, who has placed him as a steward of the mysteries of God, that he may be found faithful in the day of the appearing of Jesus Christ, viii translator's preface.
