Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament My Father acquired a knowledge of the German language during his travels in the country in 1815-16. He translated some of the minor poems of Schiller in 1823. Later, his attention was directed to German Theology, and finding there was no English version of Eichorn's 'Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament, ' he set to work to make one. For this purpose he studied Hebrew and Arabic; with Greek he was well acquainted. But he gave up the task when he had translated a portion of the work, and he took no steps for printing even this. Now, in his ninety-eighth year, he has asked me to have the fragment printed. The translation was made from an early edition of Eichorn's works. From my ignorance of the languages of antiquity, it is not within my competence to do more than to correct the proofs of the translation. I regret that circumstances prevent my calling in further help than has been kindly afforded by the printer. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Books of the New Testament This book is the outgrowth of a series of sermons preached on the Gospels nine years ago in my first pastoral charge. These sermons were rewritten and published in the Presbyterian Journal of Philadelphia. Favorable notice having been accorded these articles, I was led to continue them by writing introductory articles to the other books of the New Testament for the same paper. The kind encouragement and advice of Professor Warfield, under whose able instruction in Allegheny Seminary I was permitted to study for four years, led me to think of rewriting the whole series with the view of publishing them in book form when completed. As my ministry progressed, I was also impressed with the need of having a popular treatise on New Testament Introduction for uses of instruction among the people of my charge. These things led me on in my work until it is now completed. In the preface it was said: "This work is the product of the author's experience as a student of the Bible, and a teacher of theological students in Biblical Study. From time to time, during the past fourteen years, he has been called upon to give special attention to particular themes in public addresses and Review articles. In this way the ground of Biblical Study has been quite well covered. This scattered material has been gathered, and worked over into an organic system." The volume has been issued from the press nine times since that date, and there still seems to be a demand for it on the part of the public. The author has long felt the need of a more thorough revision of the volume, as the result of fifteen years' additional study; but he has been prevented by many hindrances from doing what he so greatly desired to do, until the present year. He has used his volume as a text-book in the Union Theological Seminary, New York, during all this period, and has gone over the whole subject afresh every year.
