Organized with the assistance of an international advisory committee of medievalists from several disciplines, Medieval Latin: An Introduction and Bibliographical Guide is a new standard guide to the Latin language and literature of the period from c. A.D. 200 to 1500. Un lungo Settecento, in diretta continuità con la tradizione erudita e il metodo editoriale muratoriano, e un brevissimo Ottocento, racchiuso fra il primo decennio postunitario e le soglie della Grande guerra, quando l’avvento di una nuova e professionalizzata generazione di studiosi (Bonelli, Vittani, Torelli, Manaresi) imporrà anche in Lombardia una svolta radicale nel campo delle ricerche paleografico-diplomatistiche: sono queste le coordinate (concettuali prima ancora che cronologiche) del libro, che per la prima volta affronta in chiave storiografica una stagione centrale nella medievistica regionale e ripercorre carriere, progetti, iniziative degli individui e delle istituzioni che l’hanno animata. Ci sono al centro gli editori e le edizioni di documenti medievali di Lombardia, ma vi ruotano attorno spazi più larghi e protagonisti ben più famosi della cultura regionale (e non solo). Viene seguito il processo di definizione di una moderna filologia diplomatica nelle edizioni di fonti lombarde, segnandone le tappe salienti e i momenti di svolta, ma sullo sfondo campeggiano i temi più ampi (e più forti, e ideologicamente connotati) della medievistica pre- e post-unitaria: la questione longobarda, il mito della civiltà comunale nella cultura risorgimentale, l’identità dello stato visconteo-sforzesco. Passare in rassegna editori ed edizioni di documenti medievali in Lombardia tra Otto e Novecento significa far luce, da un’angolazione tutt’altro che secondaria, sulle dinamiche stesse di organizzazione della ricerca storica regionale, entro una dialettica vivace e ricca di implicazioni non solo scientifiche tra l’egemonico centro milanese e i municipalismi talvolta riottosi delle molte periferie.
