El libro compara las poéticas de Borges y Marechal a partir de sus apropiaciones y polémicas con el nacionalismo. La investigación surgió de una inquietud: ¿por qué Borges abandona tan abruptamente su programa criollista? Al mismo tiempo, ¿por qué el Adán Buenosayres retoma este proyecto colectivo de un grupo de poetas cuando ya está acabado? El objetivo de esta mirada es poner en diálogo dos sistemas estéticos que por momentos entran en clara conjunción, mientras que en otros se oponen rotundamente, a veces de manera explícita, otras, en clave de polémica oculta. Se estudian las confluencias y disyunciones desde sus inicios vanguardistas hasta las más álgidas disyunciones durante el peronismo, abordando algunos de sus textos más relevantes, tanto poéticos, narrativos como ensayísticos. A través del análisis discursivo de sus textos, la autora demuestra que ambos escritores inventan literariamente la nación a través de sus ficciones, aunque sus proyectos divergen en la representación de la tensión entre individuo y cuerpo social: mientras Borges defiende en su escritura la libertad del individuo por sobre toda institución social, Marechal orienta sus representaciones hacia una búsqueda de armonía entre el individuo y las instituciones sociales a través de la figura del líder. Estas páginas proponen una nueva lectura de dos de los más destacados escritores argentinos, reponiendo las variables ideológicas que incidieron en sus contextos de producción y configuraron sus itinerarios como escritores faro de la literatura argentina.
