En 2019, después de la muerte de Donald Yates, un conjunto de materiales de Borges llegó a Colecciones Especiales de la biblioteca de la Michigan State University, y resultó contener algunos manuscritos y cuadernos que hasta ese momento no se habían estudiado. Daniel Balderston coordinó a un grupo de investigadores para estudiar los cuadernos –sobre todo, los vinculados a las conferencias que dio Borges desde el momento en que perdió el miedo a hablar en público, en 1949, hasta la ceguera en 1955–. Este libro se propone la exploración del modo en que arraigaron y germinaron en la vida literaria española las semillas de los movimientos de vanguardia, desde el manifiesto futurista recogido en la revista Prometeo hasta el umbral de los años treinta, cuando una conjunción de acontecimientos políticos y literarios llevó a la crítica y autocrítica de las normas de vanguardia forjadas en los años anteriores, cerrando un ciclo de perfiles netos. El célebre catálogo de cosas predilectas que Borges refiere en "Borges y yo" incluye una sola referencia literaria y es a la prosa de Stevenson. El nombre de Stevenson, pues, funciona para Borges como criterio de cualidad literaria y talismán personal, y sus resonancias pueden encontrarse en numerosos pasajes de su obra. Durante muchos años Borges ha desconcertado a sus críticos al insistir en la importancia que han tenido para él escritores como Stevenson, Wells, Chesterton y Kipling; y más aún, al declarar que toda su obra deriva de ellos. Por otro lado, es posible comprobar, en varias de las entrevistas dadas a lo largo de los años, su falta de interés por una larga serie de autores de los siglos XIX y XX, mientras que un nombre reaparece insistentemente como el de su maestro: Robert Louis Stevenson. Entre los críticos que se dieron al ejercicio de entender por qué Borges se interesó en los que él reconocía sus precursores y de qué manera las lecturas que hizo de ellos influyeron en sus escritos, el nombre de Daniel Balderston se inscribe en primer lugar. Publicado en Argentina a mediados de la década del 80 –a instancias de Enrique Pezzoni y Josefina Ludmer–, El precursor velado: R. L. Stevenson en la obra de Borges se convirtió rápidamente en un texto de referencia ineludible para cotejar el deslumbrante uso creativo que Borges hizo de sus lecturas de Stevenson. Al citar a Stevenson, dice Balderston, Borges se cita a sí mismo citando a Stevenson. El precursor es distanciado y velado por medio de la alusión. La infinita serie de citas en que todos los originales se pierden (el texto de Borges): un nuevo avatar de la paradoja de Zenón.
