El presente libro aborda una construcción crítica y, además, práctica de la investigación cualitativa en enfermería y salud. Este es un gran momento para escribir sobre el carácter de la investigación en las ciencias sociales, ya que hay un creciente interés por ella y una apertura a nuevas formas de investigación. Los investigadores en todas las ciencias sociales han aumentado su trabajo con información cualitativa —transcripciones de entrevistas, reportes verbales, videos de interacciones sociales, dibujos y notas—,ya sea que la visualicen como "información suave" (Ericsson y Simon, 1984), "información enredada" (Chi, 1997:271) o "lo 'bueno' de las ciencias sociales" (Ryan y Bernard, 2000:769). Los proyectos de investigación que incluye dicho material empírico son cada vez más populares. Aparte de investigadores que se consideran explícitamente "investigadores cualitativos", los investigadores en las ciencias del aprendizaje [Learning Sciences], en psicología del desarrollo, en psicología cultural, aun en investigación de encuestas y en muchas otras áreas han girado hacia material no cuantitativo y están explorando maneras de recolectarlos, analizarlos y llegar a conclusiones a partir de él. Al mismo tiempo se ha desatado una fuerte reacción en contra de este tipo de investigación. En Estados Unidos, Inglaterra y Australia las prioridades de financiamiento de las agencias gubernamentales se enfocan en la investigación "basada en evidencia". Se nos dice constantemente que hay un "patrón oro" para la investigación en las ciencias sociales, el estudio clínico aleatorizado. Otro tipo de investigaciones —ideadas como naturalistas, observacionales y descriptivas— son vistas como mero desecho en comparación, buenas únicamente para generar hipótesis, no para probarlas. Son vistas con falta del rigor necesario para una investigación verdaderamente científica, y como fallidas al ofrecer una solución práctica a problemas urgentes.
