This book is one of the first to attempt a systematic in-depth analysis of assessment in mathematics education in most of its important aspects: it deals with assessment in mathematics education from historical, psychological, sociological, epistmological, ideological, and political perspectives. The book is based on work presented at an invited international ICMI seminar and includes chapters by a team of outstanding and prominent scholars in the field of mathematics education. Based on the observation of an increasing mismatch between the goals and accomplishments of mathematics education and prevalent assessment modes, the book assesses assessment in mathematics education and its effects. In so doing it pays particular attention to the need for and possibilities of assessing a much wider range of abilities than before, including understanding, problem solving and posing, modelling, and creativity. The book will be of particular interest to mathematics educators who are concerned with the role of assessment in mathematics education, especially as regards innovation, and to everybody working within the field of mathematics education and related areas: in R&D, curriculum planning, assessment institutions and agencies, teacher trainers, etc.

Curriculum materials are among the most pervasive and powerful influences on school mathematics. In many mathematics classes, student assignments, the questions the teacher asks, the ways students are grouped, the forms of assessment, and much more originate in curriculum materials. At the same time, teachers have considerable latitude in how they use their curriculum materials. Two classes making use of the same materials may differ markedly in what mathematics content is emphasized and how students are engaged in learning that content. This volume considers a variety of research tools for investigating the enactment of mathematics curriculum materials, describing the conceptualization, development, and uses of seven sets of tools. Mathematics education researchers, curriculum developers, teacher educators, district supervisors, teacher leaders, and math coaches will find insights that can improve their work, and guidance for selecting, adapting, and using tools for understanding the complex relationship between curriculum materials and their enactment in classroom instruction.

Investigating Science With Young Children written by Rosemary Althouse and has been published by Teachers College Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with Education categories.

Teaching science to young children has long been an area of intense interest and concern to educators. Investigating Science with Young Children is specifically designed to address this concern in a practical, timely, and enjoyable way. Originally planned as an extension of the ten-booklet series, Science Experiences for Young Children (Teachers College Press, 1975), this book outlines 85 lively activities the teacher can use in guiding three-, four-, and five-year-olds in a fruitful exploration of science. The first part of the book presents a theoretical explanation of the process approach advocated by the author; the second, the activities themselves: Exploring Water, Mixing Colors, Setting Objects in Motion, to name a few. Investigating Science with Young Children offers an informed guide to resources necessary to implement an effective and productive science program. The book will help teachers fully understand the process approach and encourage them to develop their own science activities for the classroom. As the author states, “It is not enough to read about process science; you must use it to find out how much children enjoy and learn from this method.” This book will serve as a supplemental text for early childhood and primary science curriculum courses and as an invaluable resource for teachers. “There is much of value here.” —School Science & Mathematics “Teaching science by a process approach is an exciting adventure for both teachers and children. There is neither a predetermined sequence of events for children nor a specific set of directions for the teacher. Process science is an open-ended approach, and the direction learning will take is determined, for the most part, by the children.” —From the Preface

Barbara Jaworski addresses a number of questions that are central to research on reform in mathematics education today. In this volume she attempts to chart critically yet honestly her own developing ideas as she undertakes a several-year-long enquiry into mathematics teaching and gives a very personal account of her developing conceptions, conjectures, thoughts and reflections. The author accounts for her research both genetically and biographically, simultaneously restructuring the development of her ideas and giving a rigorous, critical and reflective account.

The Process Of Learning Mathematics written by L. R. Chapman and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-06 with Education categories.

The Process of Learning Mathematics is a collection of essays from a two-term course of intercollegiate lectures for students of B.Ed. degree. This collection starts with two different views on the nature of mathematics. One essay discusses the role of intuition in understanding mathematics, while another paper expounds on the role of logic. This book then discusses the generalization, structure, and approximations used in teaching mathematics, and emphasizes the problems of applied mathematics and technology pertaining to equations of motion, mathematical representation of physical phenomena, or in relations such as conservation of matter. One paper reviews Piaget's studies on the development of children's thinking process, noting that teachers should consider the level of thinking the pupil uses when designing his teaching material. Another essay deals with how the existing knowledge in a student can affect new kinds of learning through assimilation and accommodation. This book then describes the use of symbols and "reflective intelligence," addressing reflective activities, communication, and the contribution of symbols. This text then discusses computer-assisted education and several mathematical teaching or learning experiments. This compendium can prove useful for mathematics majors, educators, school administrators, and math teachers.

Mathematics education research as a discipline is situated at the confluence of an array of diffuse‚ seemingly incommensurable‚ and radically divergent discourses. Research claims that have grown out of mathematics education are wide-ranging and antagonistic rather than circumscribed by hidebound disciplinary frames. While there has never been a unified‚ totalising discipline of knowledge labelled ‘mathematics education research’‚ and while it has always been a contested terrain‚ it is fair to say that the master paradigm out of which this field has been generated has been that of cognitive psychology. Mainstream mathematics education knowledges refracting the master discourse of psychology —whereby cognition serves as the central privileged and defining concept— clearly delimits its possibilities for serving as a social tool of democratic transformation. The central point of departure of this new collection is that mathematics education research is insufficiently univocal to support the type of uncompromising interpretation that cognitive psychologists would bring to it. The hallmark contribution of this pathbreaking volume edited by Paola Valero and Robyn Zevenbergen is the paradigmatic shift the authors have effected in the field of mathematics education research‚ taking up a position at the faultline of socio-cultural analysis and critical pedagogy.
