Field Ionization Mass Spectrometry focuses on developments in field ionization (FI) mass spectrometry and describes its applications in physical chemistry, with emphasis on mass spectrometric problems. Physico-chemical problems as well as problems of chemical analysis are considered based on issues such as the probability of field ionization; field dissociation and charge distribution; kinetics of ion decomposition in high fields; negative ions; surface diffusion; activation of FI emitters; and elucidation of the structures of organic compounds. This book is comprised of four chapters and begins with a short review on some of the most important directions of research in FI mass spectrometry. In this thesis, the ionization of atoms and small molecules in strong laser fields is experimentally studied using a reaction microscope. The population of autoionizing doubly excited states in the laser fields is proven and a possible connection to the well-known dielectronic recombination processes is discussed. The fundamental process of tunnel ionization in strong laser fields is subject of investigation in a pump-probe experiment with ultrashort laser pulses. A coherent superposition of electronic states in singly charged argon ions is created within the first, and subsequently tunnel-ionized with the second pulse. This gives access to state-selective information about the tunneling process and allows to test common models. Moreover, the ionization of krypton and argon at different wavelengths is studied, from the multiphoton to the tunneling regime. The wavelength-dependent investigations are furthermore extended to molecular hydrogen. In addition to ionization, this system might undergo different dissociative processes. Channel-selective electron momentum distributions are presented and compared to each other.

In the late nineteenth century, Sir J.J. Thompson’s experiment on cathode ray tubes led to the ultimate invention of the mass spectrometer. Mass spectrometry (MS) is now recognized as a highly selective and sensitive analytical tool with a myriad of applications. To date, most MS systems are better suited for laboratory usage. However, much effort is being place in developing instrumentation and methodologies for field applications. Correspondingly, studies must be conducted to assess the suitability of instrument usage in the field. In recent years, a relatively new class of ionization techniques, ambient ionization, is gaining much popularity. In conjugation with portable mass spectrometry, these techniques have the potential for rapid, on-site analyte detection from samples in their native states. The objective of this research is to investigate the ruggedness of a portable mass spectrometer, the FLIR Systems AI-MS 1.2, and optimization of ambient ionization sources to determine their combined reliability for field applications. Instrument ruggedness was demonstrated by subjecting it to changes in temperature and relative humidity while observing its response to analyte detection. The robust instrument, coupled with ambient ionization sources, was employed for on-site forensic and environmental analysis. Paper spray ionization (PSI) was explored for rapid detection of synthetic cannabinoids but prompted an optimization study involving the employed spray solvent system to enhance reliability of use. Paper cone spray ionization (PCSI) was investigated for qualitative analysis of agrochemical contaminants in soil, an application area that has not been successfully reported via ambient MS methods. Proof-of-principle investigations into temporal profiling of agrochemical degradation was also examined.

Portable mass spectrometry (MS) has become an area of interest due to the ability to conduct chemical analyses in native environments. These instruments have the potential to increase efficiency and analytical throughput via real-time experimentation, minimizing the need for sample transportation. One drive towards the development of fieldable mass spectrometers is the potential for coupling to novel ambient ionization methods (or "ambient MS"), which can generate spectral data at ambient conditions from unprepared or minimally prepared samples of interest. Since the first introduction of the desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) technique in 2004, a myriad of novel techniques have been reported and applied, such as paper spray ionization (PSI), direct analysis in real time (DART), filter cone spray ionization (FCSI), etc. These methods allow for diverse sample types to be processed, opening the door to a variety of impactful applications.Forensics and homeland security are fields that can benefit from portable instrumentation, creating quick analytical capabilities during a criminal investigation or public safety events. Though it has been observed that portable MS systems can identify samples such as drugs of abuse, chemical warfare agents (CWAs), and explosives in a range of sample matrices, other factors/criteria must be considered before implementing into standard procedural methods of evidence collection. A factor to consider, however, is the instrumentals performance during exposure to common environmental conditions. The effect of temperature, relative humidity and windspeed were tested on the FLIR Systems Griffin Atmospheric Inlet-Mass Spectrometer (AI-MS) 1.2, observing target detection, signal intensity and signal duration while implementing PSI-MS, a newer ambient MS method that employs disposable paper substrates for sample collection and processing. Trends were interpreted to determine optimal conditions for high instrument performance, as well as potential conditions that yield a negative impact on sample processing. Other criteria are of note, such as the recommendations provided by the Scientific Working Group for the Analysis of Seized Drugs (SWGDRUG) for generating instrumental methods for forensic evidence confirmation; these recommendations center on the need for a multi-method analytical scheme for producing a definitive identification with prosecutorial ramifications. Towards this, a platform for combining surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and PSI-MS was developed to characterize the processing of authentic illicit drug analytes. A validation study was then performed, testing the overall reliability and accuracy of the dual methodology through a user blinded error rate study. Further, the potential admissibility of forensic drug evidentiary data produced from portable MS systems was examined, using the constraints of the Daubert or Frye standards for forensic evidence testimony as a guide. Overall, the efforts contained in this thesis seek to demonstrate the potential of portable mass spectrometry towards forensic/homeland security investigations.

The interaction of intense electric fields with clusters has been an active area of research following the observation of the first laser-induced Coulomb explosion of a cluster in 1994. The research reported in this dissertation focuses on the strong-field ionization behavior of small clusters composed of early transition metals, carbon, and oxygen. Specifically, several Group IV, V, and VI transition metals have been bonded either with themselves or in combination with sufficient oxygen or carbon atoms to form a variety of small (fewer than 40 atoms) cluster species. Following the ionization of these clusters via ultrashort laser pulses, observations are made regarding the ion products, their energies, and the mechanisms which led to their creation. Time-of-flight mass spectrometry is used to obtain data on the resulting species. A general overview of laser-matter interactions and strong-field ionization is provided in Chapter 1. The experimental apparati, including a colliding-pulse, mode-locked dye laser, a laser ablation cluster source, and a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer, are described in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, strong-field ionization studies of transition metal (Ti, V, Cr, Nb, or Ta) oxide clusters are presented. Trends relating the reported ionization energies of the component atoms and the observed maximum charge states of the ions are reported. Discussion is offered relating the observed ionization behavior to the most commonly considered enhanced ionization mechanisms from the literature. The results of the strong-field ionization of pure transition metal clusters are then reported in Chapter 4 and this data is compared to that obtained for the transition metal oxide species. The maximum ionization states for the metal atoms in both the homo- and heteronuclear systems were identical and the ramifications of this phenomenon with regard to ionization dynamics are discussed. Finally, Chapter 5 contains data and analysis of the strong-field ionization and subsequent Coulomb explosion of transition metal carbide clusters. Remarkably, the maximum charge states for each constituent transition metal atom in both types of heteronuclear system, as well as the pure metal clusters, were identical following ultrashort laser ionization. Studies of these systems satisfy several specific goals in laser-induced Coulomb explosion research. First, the theory regarding strong-field ionization of clusters in this size regime is somewhat lacking, and the reported ionization mechanisms are complex and not unambiguous. The additional information regarding experimental values for maximum charge states with respect to not only cluster composition but also the ionizing laser conditions should prove beneficial to the advancement of theoretical models. In that same vein, studies of heteronuclear, covalently-bound clusters have never been reported in the literature, and thus the information garnered from these experiments provides a perspective as yet unavailable. Further, by systematically controlling the elemental composition of our cluster distributions, we have been able to observe trends in the ionization behavior with respect to the overall cluster composition and its effects on the individual atomic species contained with these species.
