As technology has opened new windows into the brain, it has clarified what happens there when people make decisions about money. This clarity has produced a new science called neuroeconomics, which addresses diverse questions, such as why people save, buy stocks, steal, and overspend. In experience-based decisions people learn to make decisions by sampling the relevant alternatives and getting feedback. The study of experience-based decisions has recently revealed some robust regularities that differ from how people make decisions based on descriptions. For example, people were found to underweight small probability events in experience-based decisions, while overweighting them in decisions based on descriptions (i.e. where the participants have full information about the outcome distributions but no feedback). This is now commonly referred to as the description-experience gap. In parallel to the recent advancement in Decision Science, neuroscientists have for a long while used the experience-based decisions paradigm for analyzing brain-behavior interactions. For example, phenomena such as the feedback-based Error-Related Negativity (fERN) in event-related potentials and the role of non-declarative knowledge in selecting advantageously were discovered using experience-based tasks. The goal of the current Research Topic is to combine two sources of knowledge concerning experience-based decisions: State of the art models in decision science, and neuroscientific and psychophysiological approaches that shed light on the working of the brain in these decisions. Also relevant are process-based analyses of fractions of behavior in these types of decisions. We consider original empirical work and theoretical analyses of existing datasets.

When analyzing the rationality of individuals' economic decisions, researchers have long recognized that emotion plays a key role in the decision process. Decisions are often guided by the experience of emotion, and emotion can help or hinder decision processes by signaling advantageous outcomes or by leading individuals to suboptimal choice. Cognitive reappraisal may be utilized as a controlled process (i.e. requiring executive control) in an effort to achieve decision outcomes that maximize individuals' personal subjective utility, achieved particularly by longer-term considerations not guided by immediate prospects. Following Bayesian rationality may be vital to achieving consistent decision outcomes that maximize utility, and the present research explores the relationship between affect and economic choice in order to establish how negative and positive affect influence the decision process when participants make economic decisions through an Iowa gambling task. Additionally, the research examines how cognitive reappraisal may allow for specialized prefrontal cortex decision making where Bayesian rationality is achieved through reappraisals of negative and positive affect states. Furthermore, reward-based learning is explored in an effort to determine how participants update the probabilities of obtaining advantageous outcomes. The study used an experimental 3x2 factorial design examining emotion (3- positive, negative, and neutral) and cognitive reappraisal (2- reappraisal or no reappraisal instructions). 300 college participants were randomly assigned to watch film clips for emotion elicitation with or without cognitive reappraisal conditions, and made selections in a computerized gambling task with the goal of making as much money as possible. Emotion elicitation did not influence decision making in the gambling task, nor did receiving reappraisal instruction. However, further analyses revealed the successful decision makers were significantly more likely to show learning in the task, which indicates reward-based learning as a function of time is an important factor contributing to economically advantageous decision making. Implications of the research and suggestions for future studies examining transient emotion elicitation and cognitive reappraisal are discussed.

Decision-making under uncertainty in the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) has been intensively studied over the last twenty years regarding both “hot” and “cold” components. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex is a key region involved in processing somatic marker information, though recent findings suggest that dorsolateral regions are also important. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is also known as a substrate of executive functions -- the cold component of decision-making. However, there is contradictory evidence about the role of executive functions, as well as the hot component of decision-making -- emotional intelligence. This study seeks to address this inconsistency. Previous findings suggest that patients with right frontal lobe lesions should find decision-making more problematic in IGT. This article investigates the importance of emotional intelligence as the hot and executive functions as the cold components of decision-making in IGT. We obtained data from patients with right frontal lobe tumours and healthy controls who undertook IGT, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and D-KEFS Colour-Word Interference Test. The current findings imply that performance in IGT is highly correlated with several parameters of set-shifting in the WCST: correct answers, conceptual level responses and non-perseverative errors. However, no correlation is found with cognitive inhibition parameters in the Colour-Word Interference Test, while an interaction between the emotional intelligence parameters and the performance on IGT is low.
