This book provides a comprehensive view of the methods and approaches for performance evaluation of computer networks. It offers a clear and logical introduction to the topic, covering both fundamental concepts and practical aspects. It enables the reader to answer a series of questions regarding performance evaluation in modern computer networking scenarios, such as ‘What, where, and when to measure?’, ‘Which time scale is more appropriate for a particular measurement and analysis?’, 'Experimentation, simulation or emulation? Why?’, and ‘How do I best design a sound performance evaluation plan?’. The book includes concrete examples and applications in the important aspects of experimentation, simulation and emulation, and analytical modeling, with strong support from the scientific literature. It enables the identification of common shortcomings and highlights where students, researchers, and engineers should focus to conduct sound performance evaluation. This book is a useful guide to advanced undergraduates and graduate students, network engineers, and researchers who plan and design proper performance evaluation of computer networks and services. Previous knowledge of computer networks concepts, mechanisms, and protocols is assumed. Although the book provides a quick review on applied statistics in computer networking, familiarity with basic statistics is an asset. It is suitable for advanced courses on computer networking as well as for more specific courses as a secondary textbook.

Reading without meditation is sterile; meditation without reading is liable to error; prayer without meditation is lukewarm; meditation without prayer is unfruitful; prayer, when it is fervent, wins contemplation, but to obtain contemplation without prayer would be rare, even miraculous. Bernhard de Clairvaux (12th century) NobodycandenythatIP-basedtra?chasinvadedourdailylifeinmanyways and no one can escape from its di?erent forms of appearance. However, most people are not aware of this fact. From the usage of mobile phones – either as simple telephone or for data transmissions – over the new form of telephone service Voice over IP (VoIP), up to the widely used Internet at the users own PC, in all instances the transmission of the information, encoded in a digital form, relies on the Internet Protocol (IP). So, we should take a brief glimpse at this protocol and its constant companions such as TCP and UDP, which have revolutionized the communication system over the past 20 years. The communication network has experienced a fundamental change, which was dominated up to end of the eighties of the last century by voice appli- tion.Butfromthemiddleoftheninetieswehaveobservedadecisivemigration in the data transmission. If the devoted reader of this monograph reads the title ‘IP tra?c theory and performance’, she/he may ask, why do we have to be concerned with mod- ing IP tra?c, and why do we have to consider and get to know new concepts.

Data Networks Ip And The Internet written by Martin P. Clark and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-05-07 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Data Networking is a capability that allows users to combine separate data bases, telecommunication systems, and specialised computer operations into a single integrated system, so that data communication can be handled as easily as voice messages. Data communications is the problem of getting information from one place to another reliably (secure both from channel disruptions and deliberate interference) while conforming to user requirements. IP (Internet protocol) is the central pillar of the Internet and was designed primarily for internetworking as being a simple protocol almost any network could carry. The business world appears to increasingly revolve around data communications and the Internet and all modern data networks are based around either the Internet or at least around IP (Internet Protocol)-based networks. However, many people still remain baffled by multiprotocol networks - how do all the protocols fit together? How do I build a network? What sort of problems should I expect? This volume is intended not only for network designers and practitioners, who for too long have been baffled by the complex jargon of data networks, but also for the newcomer - eager to put the plethora of "protocols" into context. After the initial boom the rate of IP development is now beginning to stabilise, making a standard textbook and reference book worthwhile with a longer shelf life. Highly illustrated and written in an accessible style this book is intended to provide a complete foundation textbook and reference of modern IP-based data networking - avoiding explanation of defunct principles that litter other books. Network/IP engineers, Network operators, engineering managers and senior undergraduate students will all find this invaluable.

TheInternationalConferenceonWired/WirelessInternetCommunications(WWIC)was held for the second time, following a successful start in 2002, in LasVegas. The goal of theconferencewastopresenthigh-qualityresultsinthe?eld,andtoprovideaframework for research collaboration through focused discussions that designated future research efforts and directions. The number and the quality of submissions indicate that we are well on the way to establishing WWIC as a major event in the ?eld of wired/wireless internet communications. We received around 60 competitive submissions from Europe, North America, the Middle East and the Far East. Each submission was reviewed by at least two experts, although the majority received three or more reviews. Based on this rigorous reviewing procedure, the International Program Committee selected 26 submissions for presen- tion and publication in the proceedings. Therefore, we should all expect the quality of a selective conference in this volume. We hope you will enjoy it. The papers selected for presentation at WWIC 2004 were stimulating and of utmost interest. They were organized into eight sessions: 1. Protocol engineering and energy ef?ciency in wireless networks 2. Mobility management and mobile devices 3. Transport layer and congestion control 4. Architecture, implementation and experimentation 5. Network and protocol modeling 6. Wireless network scheduling and analysis 7. Multimedia distribution and group communication 8. Service discovery. We would like to thank the authors for choosingWWIC 2004 to submit their results. We would also like to thank all the members of the Technical Program Committee, as well as the additional reviewers, for their effort to provide detailed and constructive reviews.
