Atau paling tidak, globalisasi tidak membuat manusia menjadi semakin merasa memiliki kesamaan, tetapi malah semakin mempertanyakan identitas mereka. Tariq Ramadan, yang pemikirannya dikritisi dalam buku ini, memang pernah mengeluhkan kenyataan perkembangan teknologi komunikasi dan informasi ternyata tidak membuat manusia saling memahami, malah jurang ketidakpahaman semakin menjadi. Hal itu sebenarnya tidak sulit untuk dipahami mengapa terjadi. Ketika hampir semua manusia terkoneksi satu sama lain lewat jaringan tanpa kabel sehingga bisa tertawa dan menangis bersama dengan koneksi mereka di belahan bumi berbeda, di saat bersamaan ada keterputusan koneksi dengan orang-orang yang lebih dekat, seperti tetangga, kerabat, bahkan tetangga duduk di sebuah halte. Jika hubungan Islam dan Barat dijadikan kasus, maka hal serupa terjadi. Di tengah dunia global, ada kecenderungan identitas Islam dan identitas Barat semakin mengeras dan malah membenturkan diri satu sama lain. Contoh yang paling kasat mata adalah terorisme. Dan terorisme adalah anak kandung modernisasi, perkembangan ekonomi, urbanisasi, dan globalisasi. Buku ini mencoba melihat hubungan Islam dan Barat dalam sisi yang berbeda. Buku ini terlebih dahulu menelusuri akar-akar permasalahan yang menjadi bahan bakar konflik antara Islam dan Barat dan paling tidak menggaris bawahi satu hal, yaitu trauma sejarah. Trauma sejarah ini mencakup endapan memori Islam dan Barat tentang masa kejayaan Islam yang mengganggu Barat, Perang Salib, kolonialisme, dan dominasi teknologi dan peradaban Barat yang mengintervensi hampir keseluruhan aspek kehidupan, termasuk kehidupan umat Islam. Trauma sejarah ini menghantui baik Islam maupun Barat. Ketika terjadi peristiwa 11 September, sengaja atau tidak, Presiden George W. Bush menyebut Perang Salib sebagai rujukan perlawanan. Hal yang sama dilakukan oleh pihak Islam yang menganggap konflik apapun yang terjadi antara Islam dan Barat sebagai kelanjutan Perang Salib. Jika Perang Salib adalah luka lama, maka luka yang masih belum sembuh adalah imperialisme dan kolonilisme. Lewat pemikiran Tariq Ramadan, buku ini menawarkan cara pandang baru terhadap sejarah yang traumatik tersebut dengan memberikan fakta bahwa Islam dan Barat di masa kini bukan lagi dua entitas yang bisa dipisahkan dan diperhadapkan begitu saja karena kini Islam sedang tumbuh di Barat dan telah menjadi bagian dari Barat. Islam's 1,400-year history has made an important contribution to world civilization. In its nascent state, it miraculously brought the mighty Christian Byzantine and Zoroastrian Persian empires to their knees. In the span of a generation, the Islamic world became one of the largest empires in history. Despite the stereotype of Islam being spread with the sword, it was mainly adopted and practiced peacefully. Islam recognizes the fundamental importance of the individual's right to religious self-determination. Islam's aversion to compulsion and its affirmation of the individual's right to choose are clearly stated in the Quran. Nevertheless, a transformation has occurred in the Muslim world that has led to a decline in Islamic civilization. This book summarizes the major historical factors that have contributed to this decline, leading to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and proposes a three-step process of conflict resolution between Islam and the West. Internal problems, especially doctrinal struggles, were primarily responsible for Islam's downfall. In addition, disorder and intolerance followed from the devastating conquests by Christian Crusaders and Mongol hordes, and more recently from the imperialism and colonization of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Most scholarly works conducted within the period of post-New Order Indonesia have underlined the fact that Indonesian Islamists reject the notion of democracy; no adequate explanation nonetheless has been attempted thus far as to how and to what extent democracy is being rejected. This book is dedicated to filling the gap by examining the complex reality behind the Islamists' rejection of democracy. It focuses its analysis on two streams of Islamism: the two Islamist groups that seek "extra-parliamentary" means to achieve their goals, that is, MMI and HTI, and the PKS Islamists who choose the existing political party system as a means of their power struggle. As this book has demonstrated, there are times when the two streams of Islamism share a common platform of understanding and interpretation as well as an intersection where they are in conflict with one another. The interplay between contested meanings over particular theological matters on normative grounds and power contests among the Islamists proves to be critical in shaping this complexity.
