Israeli Football: Culture, Politics, and Identity focuses on the diverse aspects of the evolution of Israeli football and the social effects of these on-going processes. In the span of nine decades, Israeli football has become a faithful representation of society and its key developments. The organizational structure of the teams and their ethnic composition, fans’ chants and behaviors in the stands, gender-related issues, media involvement, and other issues have reflected important societal trends and transformations. Examples of such trends include a shift from political to private ownership of football teams, a shift from Ashkenazi to Sephardi dominance, increasing diversification of the national team — from exclusive Jewish presence to a significant presence of Arab players, including a non-Jewish captain of the national team, a shift from local-based to global-based fandom. These changes, reflecting major milestones in the evolution of Israeli football, did not occur in a vacuum but rather were integrally related to broader local and global trends. These effects may even have had a reciprocal nature, where developments in the sport sphere also affected the public sphere and prepared the ground for social change. The chapters in this book were first published as a special issue of the journal Israel Affairs.

The state of Israel is a home for a widely diverse population from many different ethnic, religious, cultural and social backgrounds; a new society with ancient roots, which is still coalescing and developing today. Israeli sport, maybe more than any other cultural phenomenon, has changed radically since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. Over the past six decades, Israeli sport has evolved from an amateur hobby of a few ‘sports freaks’, to a passion of the masses. The transformation to a major cultural phenomenon is the result of general developments in Israeli and international society. The aim of the book is to shed light on those processes that shaped the Israeli sport arena. Following the steps of numerous research perspectives, that considers sports as "text" within a socio-historical context, this book deals with the development of Israeli sports in Palestine and, later, the State of Israel as a text (or a narrative) which was contingent on the socio-historical context. In seeking to comprehend these processes, this book is divided into three parts. The Palestine period, the early stage of statehood, and the "matured" period which began in and around the early 1980s. Each period is narrated by the major participants and the major political-economical parameters which, as it is argued, shaped Israeli sport. This book was published as a special issue of the Israeli Affairs.

Football is a mirror that reflects political and social processes. It was not, and still is not, separated from the political conditions that Palestine went through and still going through tens of decades later. Football was not isolated from the British-imposed mandate on Palestine, Zionist settlements, immigration and dreams in building the national home, Nakba (the catastrophe of 1948), and Diaspora that still occur to this day. In addition, it has been subjected to Israeli restrictions throughout the longest occupation in modern history. Football helped in shaping the Palestinian national identity. Palestinians expressed themselves in sports. In fact, football was not, and still is not, a tool of achieving big results; rather, it represented a way for pride and national expression. Through the last one hundred years, current Palestinian sport was based on national-ideological, cultural, organizational and health principles. It has a historical characteristic through this period because it was attached to the political conditions in which the Palestinians went through. In some cases, Palestinian people could achieve better results for change through football than by political means. Many believe that football could be a significant tool for building an independent state.

The Arab village of Sakhnin in Galilee may have only 25,000 citizens, but it does have is its own football team, The Sons of Sahhnin, with a Jewish manager and several Jewish players in its mainly Arab squad. When, against all odds, it won Israel's State Cup, becoming Champions of Israel and the country's UEFA Cup entrant for the following year, it caused a sensation. And when its star midfield player and captain, Abbas Suan, scored a fabulous last-minute 'magical goal' for Israel against Ireland in the World Cup, keeping Israel's Cup dreams alive, Abbas became a national hero. The sight of thousands of cheering Palestinian Arabs waving the blue and white flag of Israel makes even hardened Middle Eastern observers do a double take. Could a game of football achieve what politicians on all sides had been struggling for years to deliver - a truly integrated society? Could the cardinal issues of identity, equality and coexistence be squared into one round ball? The Sons of Sakhnin are a team in harmony, in pursuit of their dream to play football and win acceptance - more than a club 'a family', in the words of its manager. However, despite their astonishing victory and achievements the Sons themselves still struggle for survival in Israel's Premier League, handicapped by the fact that despite many promises they still do not possess their own ground. This powerful and moving book follows their fortunes through the seasons, showing how these often mirror those of the larger, intense, complex society of the country in which they live, and play.

By turns tragic and hopeful, the history of Israel and Palestine through the lens of the world's most popular sport Soccer has never been apolitical. This is especially true for Israel and Palestine. The game played a direct role in shaping the politics of both countries, and the view from the stands or the pitch shines a light on key moments in the region's volatile history. In More Noble Than War, Nicholas Blincoe weaves a dramatic narrative filled with driven players and coaches who are inspired as much by nationalism as a love of the game. Blincoe traces the history from the sport's introduction through church leagues, he rising tensions after the creation of Israel, and the decades of violence, war, and hunger strikes that have decimated teams. More Noble Than War is a must-read for soccer fans and anyone seeking a new understanding of the world's most intractable conflict.

Far and away the most popular sport in the world, football has a special place in Middle Eastern societies, and for Middle Eastern states. With Qatar hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, this region has been cast into the global footballing spotlight, raising issues of geopolitical competition, consumer culture and social justice. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book examines the complex questions raised by the phenomenon of football as a significant cultural force in the Middle East, as well as its linkages to broader political and socioeconomic processes. The establishment of football as a national sport offers significant insight into the region’s historical experiences with colonialism and struggles for independence, as well as the sport’s vital role in local and regional politics today–whether at the forefront of popular mobilisations, or as an instrument of authoritarian control. Football has also served as an arena of contestation in the formation of national identity, the struggle for gender equality, and the development of the media landscape. The twelve contributions to this volume draw on extensive engagement with the existing body of literature, and introduce original research questions that promise to open new directions for the study of football in the Middle East.

Mediated Football written by Jacco van Sterkenburg and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-02 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Football has become one of the most mediated cultural practices in modern Western societies, providing players, officials and spectators with implicit and often hidden discourses about race/ethnicity, national identity and gender. This book provides new and critical insights into how mediated football as a contested cultural practice influences, and is influenced by, discourses and stereotypes about race/ethnicity, nation and gender that operate at the local, national and global level. It analyzes both contemporary media representations and the ways these representations are negotiated, interpreted and used by football media audiences. These issues are explored across all media genres (print media, television, online, social media, film, and so forth) in a multidisciplinary and cross-cultural manner, with contributions from diverse disciplines and countries. This book was originally published as a special issue of Soccer and Society.
