Wo fängt Leben an? Und was ist vielleicht kein Leben? Die Biologie definiert sich als die Lehre des Lebens. Sie fand ihren Ursprung als Wissenschaftsdisziplin bereits am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts und wurde in den weiteren Jahren von bekannten Namen wie Charles Darwin, welcher erstmals die chemische Gemeinsamkeit aller lebenden Wesen beschrieb, geprägt. In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts konnte man die Biologie den Fesseln der Physik und Chemie langsam entreißen. Das Leben als solches zu erklären, war dadurch möglich, es als "spezifisches, eigenständiges Phänomen" zu betrachten, wie Aristoteles es tat. Hier trat bereits der erste Philosoph in die Welt der Biologie. Aristoteles kategorisierte alles Seiende in organisch und unorganisch. Anders als auch sein Lehrender Platon, welcher Leben als Teil einer Weltordnung definierte, ist nach Aristoteles alles Lebende jenes, "das das Prinzip der Bewegung und Ruhe in sich besitzt". Auch in den darauffolgenden Jahren und bis zum heutigen Zeitpunkt ergeben sich aus dem Kenntnisstand der Biologie Fragen in der Philosophie. Zu beinahe jedem Themenbereich der Biologie finden sich kritische Thematiken der Philosophie, wie in etwa "‘Artificial Life‘, ‚Evolution and Ethics‘, ‚Cloning‘ oder ‚Problems of classification‘. Aus der Gegebenheit, dass die Biologie über das Lebende lehrt, bleiben die leitenden Fragen der Philosophie der Biologie die Fragen nach dem Leben. Auch die Philosophen Carol E. Cleland und Christopher F. Chyba, stellten sich eine solche Frage: "Does ‚life‘ have a definition?"

Throughout history philosophers have sought to define, understand, and delineate concepts important to human well-being. One such concept is "knowledge." Many philosophers believed that absolute, certain knowledge, is possible—that the physical world and ideas formulated about it could be given solid foundation unaffected by the varieties of mere opinion.Sextus Empiricus stands as an example of the "skeptic" school of thought whose members believed that knowledge was either unattainable or, if a genuine possibility, the conditions necessary to achieve it were next to impossible to satisfy. In other words, in the absence of complete knowledge, one must make do with the information provided by an imperfect world and conveyed to the mind through sense impressions that can often deceive us. Throughout his life Sextus Empiricus entered into intellectual combat with those who confidently claimed to possess indubitable knowledge. For skeptics, the best one can hope to achieve is a reasonable suspension of judgment—remaining ever mindful that claims to knowledge require careful scrutiny, thoughtful analysis, and critical review if we are to prevent ourselves and others from plunging headlong into mistaken notions.

The Ethics of Aristotle is one half of a single treatise of which his Politics is the other half. Both deal with one and the same subject. This subject is what Aristotle calls in one place the "philosophy of human affairs;" but more frequently Political or Social Science. In the two works taken together we have their author's whole theory of human conduct or practical activity, that is, of all human activity which is not directed merely to knowledge or truth. The Nicomachean Ethics is the name normally given to Aristotle's best-known work on ethics. The work, which plays a pre-eminent role in defining Aristotelian ethics, consists of ten books, originally separate scrolls, and is understood to be based on notes from his lectures at the Lyceum. The title is often assumed to refer to his son Nicomachus, to whom the work was dedicated or who may have edited it (although his young age makes this less likely). Alternatively, the work may have been dedicated to his father, who was also called Nicomachus. The theme of the work is a Socratic question previously explored in the works of Plato, Aristotle's friend and teacher, of how men should best live. In his Metaphysics, Aristotle described how Socrates, the friend and teacher of Plato, had turned philosophy to human questions, whereas Pre-Socratic philosophy had only been theoretical. Ethics, as now separated out for discussion by Aristotle, is practical rather than theoretical, in the original Aristotelian senses of these terms. In other words, it is not only a contemplation about good living, because it also aims to create good living. It is therefore connected to Aristotle's other practical work, the Politics, which similarly aims at people becoming good. Ethics is about how individuals should best live, while the study of politics is from the perspective of a law-giver, looking at the good of a whole community.
