In Between the Seas, Deborah Paci takes a comparative view of islandness in island identities through case studies of islands in the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas. These case studies primarily include, in the Baltic case, the Åland Islands, Gotland, Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Ruhnu; and in the Mediterranean case, Sicily, Malta, Sardinia and Corsica. In this colorful depiction of daily political life in Baroque Rome, Laurie Nussdorfer argues that the lay persons managed to sustain a civic government under the increased papal absolutism of Urban VIII (1623-1644), who oversaw both sacred and secular life. Focusing on the S.P.Q.R. (the Senate and the Roman People), which was ministered from the capitoline Hill, she shows that it provided political representation for lay members of the urban elite, carried out the work of local government, and served as a symbol of the Roman voice in public life. Through a detailed study of how civic authorities derived their sense of legitimacy and how lay subjects maneuvered in informal and disguised ways to block or criticize the papal regime, the author advances a new way of conceiving politics under an absolute ruler. As Nussdorfer analyzes the complex interactions between the lay administration and Urban VIII and his family, the papal administration, and Romans of the upper and lower classes, she also provides fresh insights into the actual practice of early modern government. She takes the plague threat of the early 1630s, the War of Castro (1641-1644), and the interregnum following the pope's death as important test cases of the state's power in times of crisis. Il volume nasce nell’ambito del Progetto di ricerca di interesse nazionale (PRIN) ‘Studi e ricerche per un Dizionario Storico dei Cartografi Italiani (2003-2005)’, coordinato da Ilaria Caraci e Claudio Cerreti. In questa occasione il gruppo di ricerca toscano si è dedicato sia alle schede biografiche dei singoli cartografi che alla schedatura degli enti che hanno prodotto la cartografa ufficiale, articolazioni istituzionali degli stati preunitari, ai quali facevano riferimento tanto gli operatori che i governi. Nel volume vengono presentate queste ultime schede che sopperiscono in parte alla mancanza di un repertorio sistematico che parta non dai fondi dove la cartografia si conserva, ma dalla committenza. Si tratta di materiale ancora abbastanza grezzo che, tuttavia, consente di inquadrare le figure di cartografi che in diversi contesti storici e politici hanno operato per costruire strumenti di rappresentazione funzionali alle esigenze del governo del territorio. Nel volume è contenuto un primo elenco (45 schede di enti) ordinato per stato e inizio dell’attività: dai Capitani di Parte Guelfa a Firenze alla Magistratura dei Quattro Conservatori di Siena fino agli Uffici del Catasto e all’Istituto Geografico Militare. 34 schede riguardano il Granducato di Toscana, 7 lo Stato di Lucca, 3 gli stati dei Presidios di Orbetello, Piombino e Massa, 1 l’IGM. In Naples and Napoleon John Davis takes the southern Italian Kingdom of the Two Sicilies as the vantage point for a sweeping reconsideration of Italy's history in the age of Napoleon and the European revolutions. The book's central themes are posed by the period of French rule from 1806 to 1815, when southern Italy was the Mediterranean frontier of Napoleon's continental empire. The tensions between Naples and Paris made this an important chapter in the history of that empire and revealed the deeper contradictions on which it was founded. But the brief interlude of Napoleonic rule later came to be seen as the critical moment when a modernizing North finally parted company from a backward South. Although these arguments still shape the ways in which Italian history is written, in most parts of the North political and economic change before Unification was slow and gradual; whereas in the South it came sooner and in more disruptive forms. Davis develops a wide-ranging critical reassessment of the dynamics of political change in the century before Unification. His starting point is the crisis that overwhelmed the Italian states at the end of the 18th century, when Italian rulers saw the political and economic fabric of the Ancien Régime undermined throughout Europe. In the South the crisis was especially far reaching and this, Davis argues, was the reason why in the following decade the South became the theatre for one of the most ambitious reform projects in Napoleonic Europe. The transition was precarious and insecure, but also mobilized political projects and forms of collective action that had no counterparts elsewhere in Italy before 1848, illustrating the similar nature of the political challenges facing all the pre-Unification states. Although Unification finally brought Italy's insecure dynastic principalities to an end, it offered no remedies to the insecurities that from much earlier had made the South especially vulnerable to the challenges of the new age: which was why the South would become a problem - Italy's 'Southern Problem'.

Nel volume, nato da un progetto di ricerca sostenuto dal Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca, che ha coinvolto studiosi di diversa formazione – storici, archeologi, storici dell'arte, architetti, antropologi, linguisti –, per la prima volta si affronta in modo sistematico il variegato mondo del collezionismo in Calabria, argomento finora in gran parte negletto dalla storiografia. Lo studio del collezionismo è considerato non come mera ricostruzione di un insieme o puntuale riscontro dei passaggi di proprietà delle opere d'arte, ma come fenomeno dalle molteplici implicazioni: vengono presi in esame, ad esempio, la funzione della collezione, la “politica culturale” del collezionista, le forme del mecenatismo, l'identità familiare, individuale civica e sociale che veniva rispecchiata attraverso gli oggetti posseduti. Seguendo l'impostazione che la curatrice ha già sperimentato, con importanti esiti, in altri precedenti studi, il collezionismo è stato considerato in modo innovativo per la Calabria, allargando gli orizzonti di studio alle aree con cui la regione ha avuto storicamente i più stretti legami ovvero non solo Napoli, ma anche Roma, Genova e la Spagna. La copiosa documentazione inedita, che si pubblica, ha permesso di fare luce su realtà artistiche e culturali di cui finora si era all'oscuro persino dell'esistenza. L'arco cronologico considerato, dal viceregno al periodo postunitario, permette interessanti comparazioni, in una prospettiva di “lunga durata” che ha consentito di ricostruire la trama di un tessuto in gran parte dimenticato. Il volume, con immagini interamente a colori, è rivolto non solo ai giovani che si stanno formando, agli studiosi e a chi si occupa della tutela e conservazione del patrimonio storicoartistico, ma anche a tutti coloro che desiderano conoscere un'affascinante realtà dalle molte sfaccettature, finora quasi del tutto ignorata.

Il volume è l'esito di un progetto di ricerca sulla Calabria del viceregno spagnolo - considerata come parte di un sistema più vasto quale la Monarchia Cattolica - che ha coinvolto, a livello internazionale, studiosi di diversa formazione e appartenenza. I contributi spaziano dalla storia alle identità sociali, dai patriziati urbani alle comunità religiose, comprendendo l'attività produttiva, l'architettura, la scultura, la pittura e la miniatura (lette alla luce del contesto culturale che le ha prodotte, ma con grande attenzione anche all'analisi stilistica e filologica), l'urbanistica e il restauro. La Calabria vicereale, luogo cruciale di transito e di scambi, spesso anche di incursioni, emerge come un crocevia da cui si diramano percorsi e vicende che la collegano al resto d'Italia, al Mediterraneo e all'Europa. Il confronto interdisciplinare ha messo in luce gli aspetti vitali e creativi di un periodo storico, tra Rinascimento e Barocco, travagliato, ma molto vivace culturalmente, politicamente e anche economicamente, che ha prodotto importantissimi monumenti, opere d'arte e testi letterari, che non sempre, anche a causa della mancanza di studi, sono valorizzati e tutelati come meritano. In questa nostra epoca di conflitti e di tensioni, di relativismi esasperati, di identità aperte e incerte, i saggi qui presentati, oltre a gettare luce sul passato, contribuiscono a far riflettere, sotto molti punti di vista, anche sul presente: su quanto gli scambi e gli incontri tra culture diverse possano risultare arricchenti. Alessandra Anselmi insegna Storia dell'Arte Moderna presso l'Università della Calabria ed è specializzata nello studio dei rapporti tra l'Italia e la Spagna in epoca moderna.
