Cartea aceasta apare la douăzeci de ani de la căderea regimurilor comuniste. Prima ei ediţie a văzut lumina tiparului acum zece ani, cu titlul Miracolul revoluţiei şi subtitlul O istorie politică a căderii regimurilor comuniste. Titlul era, evident, ironic, de vreme ce probam că deznodământul a fost inevitabil şi nu a avut nimic miraculos. Unii au citit titlul ca anunţând un eseu politic despre anul 1989. Nu; cartea de faţă este, de fapt, o cronică a evenimentelor de atunci. Ea se întinde de la mijlocul anilor '70 (Conferinţa de la Helsinki, alegerea lui Karol Wojtyła papă, instalarea lui Ronald Regan la Casa Albă şi a lui Margaret Thatcher în Downing Street 10th - aşadar, de la invadarea Afaganistanului la fenomenul Solidarność) până la alegerea lui Gorbaciov la Kremlin, în martie 1985, şi declanşarea frământărilor cu caracter revoluţionar în toate ţările din Europa Centrală şi de Est. Descrierea revoluţiei din 1989 este miezul acestei cărţi, care urmăreşte evenimentele până la puciul de la Moscova, din august 1991, demisia lui Gorbaciov şi prăbuşirea URSS, când am pus punct acestei cronici. Pentru a înlătura confuzia şi din spirit de riigoare, am preferat să inversez titlul cu subtitlul ediţiei din 1999, anunţând, mai clar, încă de pe copertă, intenţiile autorului şi natura acestei cărţi. Pentru cei care au trăit evenimentele anului 1989, Istoria căderii regimurilor comuniste constituie o foarte utilă aducere aminte. Pentru cei născuţi după 1989, ea nu este doar o bine documentată punere în temă, ci și un serios avertisment! Cartea este, de fapt, o cronică a evenimentelor care se întind de la mijlocul anilor ’70 până la alegerea lui Gorbaciov la Kremlin, în martie 1985, şi de-clanşarea frământărilor cu caracter revoluţionar în toate ţările din Europa Centrală şi de Est. Autorul analizează, printre altele, războiul din Afganistan, criza și „carnavalul polonez”, „dictatura cu gulaș” maghiară, „pacificarea” de după 1968 a Cehoslovaciei, „stalinismul târziu” din România lui Ceaușescu, reformele chinezești, „perestroika” lui Gorbaciov şi prăbuşirea URSS. „Stelian Tănase pune pe masă informațiile necesare în Istoria căderii regimurilor comuniste, dar nu le interpretează. Politologul redevine istoric. Această modestie este un lux pe care nu și-l pot permite decât cei care, azi, se află înăuntrul datelor istorice…” (Ioan Buduca) Lavinia Betea menționează în cuvântul înainte: În mulțimea scrierilor despre comunism și a numeroșilor autori care abordează teme majore ale contemporaneității, Stelian Tănase este o prezență de o prodigiozitate și acribie aparte. Eu nu cunosc pe un altul care, în ultimii 30 de ani, să fi depus mai mult efort prin cercetarea de arhivă și intervievarea de martori implicați. Expert al gnozei comuniste și contestatar al acesteia din înseși anii omnipotenței sale în estul „cortinei de fier”, s-a proiectat frenetic, după căderea regimului, în excepționalitatea unor fapte care-au marcat schimbarea… Să citim, așadar, cu luare aminte această carte capitală și pentru înțelegerea „enigmelor” lui decembrie 1989 din România.
