Ivanhoe (/ˈaɪvənˌhoʊ/) is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, first published in late 1819 in three volumes and subtitled A Romance. At the time it was written it represented a shift by Scott away from fairly realistic novels set in Scotland in the comparatively recent past, to a somewhat fanciful depiction of medieval England. It has proved to be one of the best known and most influential of Scott's novels.Ivanhoe is set in 12th-century England with colourful descriptions of a tournament, outlaws, a witch trial and divisions between Jews and Christians. It has been credited for increasing interest in romance and medievalism; John Henry Newman claimed Scott "had first turned men's minds in the direction of the Middle Ages", while Thomas Carlyle and John Ruskin made similar assertions of Scott's overwhelming influence over the revival, based primarily on the publication of this novel. It has also had an important influence on popular perceptions of Richard the Lionheart, King John, and Robin Hood.

Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott is a classic example of adventure literature. It is a pure “English” novel which describes the actions happening due to the death feud between Anglo-Saxons and Norman conquerors. After The Third Crusade, knights-crusaders come back home. Unfortunately, King Richard the Lionheart is captured by the Duke of Austria. His brother and a throne keeper Prince John (future John Lackland) would like to save a royal throne for him. But will the crusaders who were fighting together with King Richard agree to this? And the main question – who is this mysterious “disinherited” knight who always prevents Prince John’s servants, noble Norman landowners from implementing their plans? What secret is he hiding?

"Amateur weather forecasters (which includes just about everyone) will find this volume an informative and entertaining account of the why and how of the weather." — The Nation In simple language, Eric Sloane explains the whys and wherefores of weather and weather forecasting — and does it in a style that's universally appealing. With humor and common sense shining through in a book that's also lively and informative, Sloane shows readers how to predict the weather by "reading" such natural phenomena as winds, skies, and animal sounds. This beautifully illustrated and practical treasure trove of climate lore will enlighten outdoorsmen, farmers, sailors, and anyone else who has ever wondered what a large halo around the moon means, why birds "sit it out" before a storm, and whether or not to take an umbrella when leaving the house.
