Das 40-jährige Jubiläum des Studienprogramms "Studium in Israel" war Anlass für einen Blick auf Stand und künftige Perspektiven des christlich-jüdischen Dialogs und auf die Forschung zur rabbinischen Literatur. Das erste Thema stand bei der Jubiläumsjahrestagung im Januar 2018 in Hannover auf dem Programm, das letztgenannte auf einer Konferenz an der Hebräischen Universität Jerusalem im Juni desselben Jahres. Der vorliegende Band führt zentrale Vorträge beider Tagungen zusammen und ergänzt sie um einige weitere Beiträge. Mit seinen beiden Brennpunkten – dem christlich-jüdischen Dialog und der rabbinischen Literatur – bildet er gewissermaßen die Grundbewegung des Programms "Studium in Israel" ab: Christinnen und Christen suchen das Gespräch mit Jüdinnen und Juden und stoßen dabei auch auf die jüdische Traditionsliteratur, ihre Bedeutung für ein wirkliches Verstehen des Gegenübers und den Reichtum, der in ihr für die christliche Theologie liegt. Contributions to Jewish-Christian Dialogue and the Relevance of Rabbinic Literature] The 40th anniversary of the study program "Studium in Israel" was the occasion to take a look at Jewish-Christian dialogue and at research in Rabbinic literature asking for the situation today and for future perspectives. The first theme was central at the annual conference of "Studium in Israel" in Hannover in January 2018, the second theme at a conference at Hebrew University, Jerusalem, June 2018. This volume collects the papers of both conferences and adds some more papers on the themes mentioned. With its two foci – Jewish-Christian dialogue and Rabbinic literature – it reproduces the central movement of the study program "Studium in Israel": Christians enter into dialogue with Jews and get into contact with traditional Jewish literature, its relevance for a deeper understanding of the partner in dialogue and its richness for Christian theology.

The closest connection between Jews and Christians probably lies in the fact that they share a common scriptural basis. All of the books of the Hebrew Scriptures (Tanach) are included in the ?Old Testament= of the Christian Bible. However, the history of Judaism and Christianity shows that the same books are understood and interpreted quite differently in each of the separate contexts. The new edition of this book emphasizes common ground and differences in understanding and interpretation and takes up the intensive hermeneutic debate that has been taking place over the last 20 years. This includes new findings on interrelationships between Judaism and Christianity in the first few centuries after Christ, as well as advances in Christian&Jewish dialogue. Special attention is given to the reorientation of the relationship with Judaism based on the Second Vatican Council, which led to a new understanding of the Old Testament in Catholic theology.
