Home after Fascism draws on a rich array of memoirs, interviews, correspondence, and archival research to tell the stories of Italian and German Jews who returned to their home countries after the Holocaust. The book reveals Jews' complex and often changing feelings toward their former homes and highlights the ways in which three distinct national contexts--East German, West German, and Italian--shaped their answers to the question, is this home? Returning Italian and German Jews renegotiated their place in national communities that had targeted them for persecution and extermination. While most Italian Jews remained deeply attached to their home country, German Jews struggled to feel at home in the "country of murderers." Yet, some retained a sense of belonging through German culture and language or felt attached to a specific region or city. Still others looked to the future; socialist and communists of Jewish origin hoped to build a better Germany in the Soviet Occupied Zone. In all three postwar states, surviving Jews fought against persistent antisemitism, faced the challenge of recovering lost homes and possessions, struggled to make sense of their persecution, and tried to find ways to reclaim a sense of belonging. Wide ranging and moving, Home after Fascism enriches our understanding of Jews' homecoming experiences after 1945. Most public debate on reunited Germany has emphasized economic issues such as the collapse of East German industry, mass unemployment, career difficulties, and differences in wages and living standards. The overwhelming difficulty resulting from reunification, however, is not persisting economic differences but the internal cultural divide between East and West Germans, one based upon different moral values in the two Germanies. The invisible wall that has replaced the previous, highly visible territorial division of the German nation is rooted in issues of the past-the Nazi past as well as the German Democratic Republic past. In emphasizing economic differences, the media and academics have avoided dealing with typically German cultural traits. These include the psychological posture of West Germany, which emphasized not differences between East and West but the break with Germany's Nazi past. The adversarial posture of certain professional groups in East Germany towards the liberal and democratic values of West Germany have also been an obstacle. Reviewing the problems accompanying reunification, chapter 1 explores German culture and history and the moral lessons evolved from the Nazi past. Chapter 2 focuses on the East-West mindset and how differences in attitude affect efforts to adapt to reunification. Chapter 3 discusses the simulated break with Nazi Germany in the German Democratic Republic. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 analyze the roots of the adversary posture of the professional groups in East Germany towards the values of the Berlin Republic. Chapter 7 demonstrates the strong presence of inherited, typically German cultural traits among East Germans, such as a lack of individualism, suspicion of strangers, and obedience to authority. Chapter 8 documents the extent to which a right-wing extremist culture has remained latent in Eastern Germany. Chapter 9 documents the extent to which moral reasoning in the GDR relieves the individual of any kind of responsibility for the actions of the state, reproducing the way ordinary Germans rationalized their participation in the Nazi regime immediately after World War II. Chapter 10 concludes with an overview of the historical and sociological factors revolving around the discussion of Nazi Germany, the GDR and inner unification. This volume will be important for historians, political scientists, anthropologists, sociologists, and a general public interested in Germany's reunification.

Im Zentrum des Buches stehen die politischen Konversionen des jüdischen Juristen und hochrangigen Mitarbeiter des SED-Parteiapparats Leo Zuckermann (1908–1985), der sich in einer kurzen Zeitspanne zwischen Zweitem Weltkrieg und Beginn des Ost-West-Konflikts für die Rechte der Juden als Kollektiv einsetzte. So befürwortete er sowohl die Gründung eines jüdischen Staates in Palästina als auch die Restitution oder Entschädigung von den Nazis geraubten jüdischen Vermögens. Anstoß für diese beispiellose und weithin vergessene Haltung innerhalb der Arbeiterbewegung hatte ihm die Diskussion der Nachrichten von der Vernichtung der europäischen Juden im mexikanischen Exil gegeben, in der herkömmliche marxistische Gewissheiten vorübergehend durchlässig und für die Integration eines jüdischen Selbstverständnisses empfänglich wurden. Ausgehend von Leo Zuckermanns politischer Biografie leistet die Studie eine Erklärung dafür, weshalb dem Holocaust in der politischen Erinnerung der kommunistischen Bewegung kaum Bedeutung zukam.

In transnational-vergleichender Perspektive werden historische Entwicklung und Bedeutung von Überlebendenorganisationen untersucht. Die nationalsozialistische Verfolgungs- und Vernichtungspolitik traf Millionen Menschen aus Europa und anderen Teilen der Welt. Nach der Befreiung entstanden zahlreiche Initiativen und Organisationen ihrer Überlebenden. Die Landschaft aus informellen Netzwerken, Amicales, Komitees, Lagergemeinschaften, nationalen Interessenverbänden und internationalen Dachorganisationen versammelte jüdische wie nicht-jüdische Verfolgte, Antifaschist:innen aus dem Exil, ehemalige Angehörige des Widerstands, Veteranen, kommunistische wie auch nicht-kommunistische Engagierte. In vielen Fällen wirkten diese Zusammenschlüsse über Grenzen von Staaten und politischen Systemen hinweg. Oftmals erstritten sie erste Erinnerungszeichen, waren entscheidend für die Entstehung von NS-Gedenkstätten und trieben – oft gegen erhebliche Widerstände – die juristische Verfolgung von NS-Täter:innen voran. Vergleichende Forschungen zu den diversen Aktivitäten von Überlebenden und ihren Organisationen sind bislang noch selten. Gerade das erarbeiten die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses Sammelbands in einer transnationalen Perspektive.
