Jacob's Room is the third novel by Virginia Woolf, first published on 26 October 1922.The novel centres, in a very ambiguous way, around the life story of the protagonist Jacob Flanders and is presented almost entirely through the impressions other characters have of Jacob. Thus, although it could be said that the book is primarily a character study and has little in the way of plot or background, the narrative is constructed with a void in place of the central character if, indeed, the novel can be said to have a 'protagonist' in conventional terms.

Jacob is described to us, but in such indirect terms that it would seem better to view him as an amalgam of the different perceptions of the characters and narrator. He does not exist as a concrete reality, but rather as a collection of memories and sensations.

Slowly welling from the point of her gold nib, pale blue ink dissolved the full stop; for there her pen stuck; her eyes fixed, and tears slowly filled them. The entire bay quivered; the lighthouse wobbled; and she had the illusion that the mast of Mr. Connor's little yacht was bending like a wax candle in the sun. She winked quickly. Accidents were awful things. She winked again. The mast was straight; the waves were regular; the lighthouse was upright; but the blot had spread. ..". nothing for it but to leave," she read. "Well, if Jacob doesn't want to play" (the shadow of Archer, her eldest son, fell across the notepaper and looked blue on the sand, and she felt chilly-it was the third of September already), "if Jacob doesn't want to play"-what a horrid blot! It must be getting late. "Over there-by the rock," Steele muttered, with his brush between his teeth, squeezing out raw sienna, and keeping his eyes fixed on Betty Flanders's back. "Ja-cob! Ja-cob!" shouted Archer, lagging on after a second. The voice had an extraordinary sadness. Pure from all body, pure from all passion, going out into the world, soli-tary, unanswered, breaking against rocks-so it sounded. Steele frowned; but was pleased by the effect of the black-it was just THAT note which brought the rest to-gether. "Ah, one may learn to paint at fifty! There's Ti-tian..." and so, having found the right tint, up he looked and saw to his horror a cloud over the bay.

How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About Jacob's Room by Virginia Woolf Jacob's Room is Virginia Woolf's experimental third novel, set in England during the halcyon days before World War I. A generous "Contexts" section provides extracts from Woolf's diaries and letters as well as comments on the novel from her fellow writers and friends, among them E. M. Forster and T. S. Eliot. Also included are the short stories "The Mark on the Wall," "Kew Gardens," and "An Unwritten Novel," which Woolf viewed as early experiments with the innovative method used in Jacob's Room. Prized for their lyrical qualities, the novels of Virginia Woolf favor the psychological realms inhabited by her characters, where thoughts are so revealed that actions lose much of their importance. Most are also concerned with the structure of narrative, including the present novel, in which Woolf conveys the impression of time present and of time passing in individual experience as well as in the characters' awareness of historic time. Considered Woolf's first original and distinguished work, Jacob's Room concerns a sensitive young man, Jacob Flanders, who finds himself unable to reconcile his love of classical culture with the chaotic reality of World War I. His story unfolds in a series of brief impressions and conversations, stream-of-consciousness narratives, internal monologues, and letters.

Adeline Virginia Woolf was one of the most important modernist 20th century authors and also a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device. During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a member of the avant-garde, intellectual Bloomsbury Group. Her most famous works include the novels Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Monday or Tuesday and Orlando, with its famous dictum, "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." When we spend so much of our time immersed in books, who's to say where reading ends and living begins? The two are impossibly and gloriously wedded, as Hill shows in Jacob's Room Is Full of Books. Considering everything from Edith Wharton's novels through to Alan Bennett's diaries, Virginia Woolf and the writings of twelfth century monk Aelred of Rievaulx, Susan Hill charts a year of her life through the books she has read, reread or returned to the shelf. From beneath a shady tree in a hot French summer, or the warmth of a kitchen during an English winter, Hill reflects on what her reading throws up, from writing and writers to politics and religion, as well as the joy of dandies or the pleasure of watching a line of geese cross a meadow. Full of wry observations and warm humour, as well as strong opinions freely aired, this is a rare and wonderful insight into the rich world of reading from one of the nation's most accomplished authors.

"Jacobs room" employs the conventions of a bildüngsroman to develop the expectations of a promising young man, only to pull them out from under him. Woolf illustrates what happens when a young man is denied the opportunity to excel and is instead sent to war. This book also serves as an elegy for the missing generation lost in the trenches of World War I.
