Today the role of public and private Japanese gardens, especially in North America has expanded beyond landscaping and recreation; they are used in commercial settings, for weddings and events, for cultural programs for professional medical therapy and more. There are over 500 Japanese Gardens existing today throughout the world mainly in North America and in Europe. Some of these date well back over a hundred years in history. There are many gardens facing extinction and major changes as it has been taking place in Japan as well. There are due to historical, social and mainly fiscal reasons. But there are a good many Japanese Gardens abroad thriving even today's uncertain time.I am, however, observing recurrent problems gardens facing changes in a name of making the gardens adapting to modern requirements and sustainability which could be contrary o the soul of Japanese garden and problems in creation of gardens which astray from the soul of Japanese garden in my understanding. Many questions have to be answered in countering these problems. These may include: (1) what is Japanese garden (in Japan)? and What is Japanese garden abroad? (2) How has Japanese Garden viewed and appreciated by people abroad? (3) Can you define "What is Japanese Garden?" for creating a new Japanese garden in a simple and clear manner for gardens outside of Japan? Or is that possible, productive and meaningful? Without heavy reliance on understanding of symbolism? (4) What is an emerging value for Japanese garden in Japan and abroad? (5) What could be the design process most suited for gardens outside of Japan? (6) What is the future of Japanese Garden abroad? This thesis is written on a complex world of Japanese garden with the following objectives as simple and clear manner as possible and as graphically as possible: (1.) Develop definition of Japanese garden abroad based on previous work and supplemented by a series of surveys and analysis. Purpose of this definition is to state in a clear and plain manner. (2.) Review the existing gardens in the North America employing common criteria to verify whether the definition of developed above is valid. (3.) Identify emerging field of Japanese garden abroad to test applicability of the definition.(4.) Develop design method applicable to the North America. One may visit famous gardens in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka—or one may visit Japanese-styled gardens in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Berlin, London, Paris, São Paulo, or Singapore. We often view these gardens as representative of the essence of Japanese culture. Christian Tagsold argues, however, that the idea of the Japanese garden has less do to with Japan's history and traditions, and more to do with its interactions with the West. The first Japanese gardens in the West appeared at the world's fairs in Vienna in 1873 and Philadelphia in 1876 and others soon appeared in museums, garden expositions, the estates of the wealthy, and public parks. By the end of the nineteenth century, the Japanese garden, described as mystical and attuned to nature, had usurped the popularity of the Chinese garden, so prevalent in the eighteenth century. While Japan sponsored the creation of some gardens in a series of acts of cultural diplomacy, the Japanese style was interpreted and promulgated by Europeans and Americans as well. But the fashion for Japanese gardens would decline in inverse relation to the rise of Japanese militarism in the 1930s, their rehabilitation coming in the years following World War II, with the rise of the Zen meditation garden style that has come to dominate the Japanese garden in the West. Tagsold has visited over eighty gardens in ten countries with an eye to questioning how these places signify Japan in non-Japanese geographical and cultural contexts. He ponders their history, the reasons for their popularity, and their connections to geopolitical events, explores their shifting aesthetic, and analyzes those elements which convince visitors that these gardens are "authentic." He concludes that a constant process of cultural translation between Japanese and Western experts and commentators marked these spaces as expressions of otherness, creating an idea of the Orient and its distinction from the West.

"In tracing the garden of Japan back to their Chinese prototypes, the book presents the first systematic account, as fascinating as it is scholarly, of Chinese garden history, and thus represents a major advance in the study of Oriental garden art in general. It also undertakes to focus Japan's gardens into the total world picture of garden art. Again, although concentrating on the traditional gardens of Japan, the book makes another important contribution by tracing their evolution into modern landscape art, an aspect that present-day readers will particularly appreciate. Also included is much information on garden-making techniques, both old and new. The narrative itself is vivid and entertaining. Against a clarifying background of people and events, the gardens emerge as living realities, and the human intentions underlying their construction become forcefully clear. The reader, whether he visits these gardens in actuality or in spirit alone, will find himself at home in an evironment of meaningful beauty."--Jacket

Create Your Own Japanese Garden written by Motomi Oguchi and has been published by Kodansha USA Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-25 with Gardening categories.

In this book, renowned garden designer Motomi Oguchi offers the reader a step-by-step, practical approach to creating Japanese gardens, drawn from a wealth of experience that covers thirty years and encompasses the design of more than 400 gardens. The author uses real examples from gardens he has designed, constructed, and photographed to illustrate his key points, approaching each work from the perspective of the home or building owner. Oguchi begins with front gardens, as these are usually what one encounters first when entering a home. Typically, these front plantings are not defined Japanese garden types but rather, physical areas. He then moves on to tsubo niwa (courtyard gardens) and kare sansui (dry gardens) that might be found in the middle or rear of a building, or any available small space. Next, he introduces tea and tree gardens, which are more likely to be sections of a larger garden; and highlights specific characteristics and conditions of interior gardens. Within each chapter are general layouts and methods of developing the various gardens, which precede specific, step-by-step instructions. The author also offers practical and affordable variations on more ambitious designs and shows how they can be adapted to the readers home or building. In addition, Oguchi emphasizes the importance of proper maintenance and offers suggestions for special touches and restoration.

**Winner of the 2006 American Horticultural Society Book Award** The Art of the Japanese Garden is the only historical overview of Japanese gardens that covers Japanese gardening culture in one beautiful book. Japanese gardens are rooted in two traditions: an indigenous prehistoric tradition in which patches of graveled forest or pebbled beach were dedicated to nature spirits, and a tradition from China and Korea that included elements such as ponds, streams, waterfalls, rock compositions and a variety of vegetation. The Art of the Japanese Garden traces the development and blending of these two traditions, as well as the inclusion of new features as gardening reached new heights of sophistication on Japanese soil. 300 full-color Japanese garden illustrations and photographs highlight notable gardens in Japan, including graveled courtyards, early aristocratic gardens, esoteric and paradise gardens, Zen gardens, warrior gardens, tea gardens and stroll gardens. Also included are sections on modern trends and Japanese gardens in other countries.
