Excerpt from Jesus and Jonah I. A Symposium Reviewed. I believe it to be universal with critics of the new school and their disciples, to deny the historical reality of the story of Jonah. Those of them who still believe in Jesus Christ, find it necessary to reckon with a statement from his lips, found in Matthew xii. 38-41. The passage seems to contain a positive affirmation of the reality of the two events which render the story of Jonah incredible in the judgment of most of these gentlemen, and they have felt the necessity of setting aside in some way its apparent force. The passage reads thus: Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet: for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold a greater than Jonah is here. In demanding of Jesus a sign, the scribes and Pharisees denied by implication that any of the multitude of signs which he had wrought were real signs; and their demand was for one of a different kind. Jesus demonstrated complete submission to the Fathers will to the point of His confident assertion, I always do those things that please My Father (John 8:29). He gave Himself in humility at Calvary to satisfy Gods wrath against all sin, as well as all sinners, and declared from the cross, It is finished. He then experienced death but rose in victory over death, thus proving His claims to divinity and giving to all His spiritual descendants resurrection power for daily living. So what is to be our response to all Christ Jesus is and all that He has suffered and accomplished on our behalf? What should be our lifes focus, our objective, our agenda, and our passion? Obedience to the things our Lord and Savior has commanded. Obedience is our duty, to be sure, but it is more than that. It is the way we express our thanksgiving for what Christ has done for us. It is gratefulness lived out on a daily basis. This kind of living involves a consistent orientation toward laying aside personal or selfish desires and agendas that bring us temporal gratification. Instead, we embrace what Jesus Christ tells us to do: to proclaim the gospel of hope to those who know it not. This is the highest expression of gratefulness from a life made new by the living Lord. Your culture, your communities, your friends, your co-workers, and your family members need to hear a word from God. You and I are the delivery persons for Gods message. We are the spokespersons for the gospel of Jesus Christ! We are the ones to whom God has said, Arise, go to Nineveh. Our Nineveh, dear people of God, is the lost people around us.

Most people, even those who are nonreligious, are familiar with the book of Jonah: a rebellious prophet defies God and is swallowed by a whale. Less familiar to most people is the second half of this Biblical story - what happens after Jonah is released from the belly of the fish. Yet it is in this second half of the story that one of the most powerful and important lessons of the Bible is hidden. The famous story shows how, if we would understand the mercy of God, it will always take us in directions we would rather not go, toward people we would rather not care about, and ultimately into the deepest counsels of God. In a time of growing division, The Prodigal Prophet shows us God's love among people, and how Christians must listen to God's call even when it takes them to uncomfortable places.

It begins with the compelling account of a man from the 1900s who also lived to tell about being swallowed alive. The fish's digestive juices destroyed the man's hair and discolored his skin but he was cut out of the fish's belly 2 days later —still alive! Suddenly, Jonah's adventure becomes more real. And once readers learn how God sent Jonah to spare Nineveh from judgment, they'll also discover that God sent His own Son to save us from hell. This full-color comic will build faith in the scriptures and lead people to Jesus. It's a powerful witnessing tool!

Jonah and God's Love is a retelling of the events described in the Book of Jonah which can be found in the Bible. It is a beautiful love story that demonstrates God's kindness, mercy and patience towards mankind. This story tells how God wants all of us to be obedient to His command and to turn away from practicing evil. It further shows God's willingness to forgive our sins if we humble ourselves before Him and repent. The story prophetically points to the time of Jesus Christ, who has the power to forgive and save anyone who wholeheartedly believes He died on the cross for the sins of the world and took upon Himself the punishment we deserved, sparing us like He spared Nineveh. The story most clearly provides a sign of Jesus with the time Jonah spent in the depths of the sea hidden inside the belly of a great fish. Similarly, after paying the ultimate price for our salvation, Jesus spent three days and three nights in the grave before rising back to life on the third day. This story finally acts as a reminder of God's love for us and His will for us to show love to one another as Christ loved us. John 3:16 (KJV)For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Both were given special missions by God. And both have something very important to teach about obedience to His plan. See biblical typology--the Old Testament people, symbols, and events that foreshadow the New Testament--come to life in "Into the Sea, Out of the Tomb: Jonah and Jesus." Recommended for ages 3 and up. About the Series What do the Old and New Testaments have in common? To answer this question, Maura Roan McKeegan presents biblical typology for children. She is the author of "The End of the Fiery Sword: Adam & Eve and Jesus & Mary, " the award-winning first book in the Old and New series, which introduces children to biblical typology. The book of Jonah was written by Jonah in Palestine in about 853–824 BC. The book is a story of a biased Jew who preached and converted the whole city of Nineveh after being chastened by the Lord for his disobedience. The purpose of the book was to show why Nineveh was destroyed and the Assyrian Empire was delayed by God for almost a century; to show that God’s mercy and salvation are for both Jews and Gentiles who repent and turn to him; and to illustrate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This is not a commentary in the traditional sense. One might call it an existential commentary. An important aim of the author is to bring out the relevance of the story, of the person, mission, and situation of Jonah, to Christians in our own time. Above all, this is a theological, or --more specifically -- a christological commentary. The author's chief aim is to relate the book, not to Christians, but to Christ. Ellul thinks Christ is the center of all Scripture, and he also takes seriously the specific reference which Christ makes to the sign of Jonah. If this reading is correct, and the Bible is indeed a unity, the exposition of Ellul, though not developed in detail, has a distinctive theological contribution to make. Those who want acute theological insight, and are not afraid of plain, hard-hitting application, will read this vivid study with relish and profit. -- From the Preface by G. W. Bromiley
