Mediterranean states are often thought to have 'democratised' only in the post-war era, as authoritarian regimes were successively overthrown. On its eastern and southern shores, the process is still contested. Re-imagining Democracy looks back to an earlier era, the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and argues it was this era when some modern version of 'democracy' in the region first began. By the 1860s, representative regimes had been established throughout southern Europe, and representation was also the subject of experiment and debate in Ottoman territories. Talk of democracy, its merits and limitations, accompanied much of this experimentation - though there was no agreement as to whether or how it could be given stable political form. Re-imagining Democracy assembles experts in the history of the Mediterranean, who have been exploring these themes collaboratively, to compare and contrast experiences in this region, so that they can be set alongside better-known debates and experiments in North Atlantic states. States in the region all experienced some form of subordination to northern 'great powers'. In this context, their inhabitants had to grapple with broader changes in ideas about state and society while struggling to achieve and maintain meaningful self-rule at the level of the polity, and self-respect at the level of culture. Innes and Philip highlight new research and ideas about a region whose experiences during the 'age of revolutions' are at best patchily known and understood, as well as to expand understanding of the complex and variegated history of democracy as an idea and set of practices.

O século XIX foi, em Portugal, um grande século de cultura. A testemunhá-lo estão não só as noções de "Instrução Pública" e de "Instrução Popular", mas também a afirmação e o desenvolvimento da imprensa. Daí o epíteto de "século do periodismo" ou "século dos jornais", para caracterizar o tempo de oitocentos. Como realidade social e consciente da intuição do espírito dos tempos, a Academia de Coimbra (incluem-se aqui os estudantes universitários e os dos outros níveis de ensino) é portadora de vivências e conceções culturais que se desenvolvem à margem da Universidade e do estudo, mas que passam por práticas múltiplas como, por exemplo, a criação de jornais e revistas e pela discussão de temas literários, filosóficos, religiosos, sociais, históricos, políticos, económicos, científicos, educativos e artísticos. Para além destas temáticas, a exercitação, também, de uma cultura de carácter satírico e humorístico, de timbre acentuadamente coimbrão, nas críticas desenvolvidas a colegas, a personalidades e situações do meio envolvente e, por fim, a divulgação de uma sabedoria de cariz mais prático e utilitário, para uma maior ilustração do público leitor. Estes jovens viram nos jornais e nas revistas os meios mais eficazes para fazerem passar as suas mensagens. Em A imprensa estudantil coimbrã. Repertório analítico (século XIX) procura-se não só registar os diversos periódicos que a Academia de Coimbra criou, desde 1821 até 1900, mas também transmitir aquelas mensagens, através de uma análise aos periódicos. Neste sentido, para cada publicação foi elaborada uma ficha, onde se apontam os títulos, os subtítulos, se os houver, os nomes dos seus responsáveis, dos colaboradores e as suas características técnicas. Sempre que referido, dá-se conta, igualmente, dos objetivos ou do programa que presidiu à criação de cada jornal ou revista. E, finalmente, em termos sintéticos, fazemos o elenco dos conteúdos de cada publicação. Conscientes da renovação concetual e metodológica que a história vem operando e não desconhecendo que a imprensa, pela sua própria natureza, é, simultaneamente, uma preciosa fonte de informação, de intervenção e de animação, julgamos deixar aqui um instrumento de referência para investigadores e estudiosos.
