Daily reading of the Bible is something many people want to do, but find that they do not know how to develop and continue this practice. The Upper Room Disciplines 2005 offers daily Bible readings that help develop the practice of spending deep devotional time with scripture. The daily scriptural meditations include suggestions for prayer and reflection that help readers open themselves to God's love and guidance. The Upper Room Disciplines offers a variety of perspectives on daily Bible readings selected from the Revised Common Lectionary. Each of the 53 writers develops a particular theme for a week's reading. Each writer's work begins on Monday and continues through Sunday. Over the course of that week, readers gain depth insights into scripture and daily life and grow through the daily practice of reading the Bible. Individual readers will grow in their Christian walk through Disciplines, and small groups will discover wisdom to continue to walk together as responsible disciples of Christ.

An Educated Man written by David Rosenberg and has been published by Catapult this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-05-10 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A magisterial project: a dual biography of the preeminent figures of Judeo–Christian civilization overturning conventional views of Moses and Jesus as humble men of faith. By reanimating the biographies of Moses and Jesus in their historical context, Rosenberg reads their narrative as a cultural—rather than religious—endeavor. He charges that Moses and Jesus were "educated" men, steeped in the literature and scholarship of their day. There were no old or new testaments for them, only a long history of writing and writers. When scholars and clergy quote Moses and Jesus, they routinely neglect to inform us that Jesus is quoting the Hebrew Bible, often in the manner that Moses quoted Egyptian medical texts. The remarkable ability of both men to recall and transform a wide range of sources is overlooked. Where did they get these profound educations? Part biography, part critical analysis, An Educated Man challenges us to envision what defines "an educated man or woman" today—and how understanding religious history is crucial to it. Rosenberg offers a sympathetic approach to why we need Judeo–Christianity—and ultimately convinces us that the life of Jesus is unthinkable without the model of Moses before him.

Danz N Days written by Hettie Malcomson and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-23 with Performing Arts categories.

Older people negotiating dance routines, intimacy, and racialized differences provide a focal point for an ethnography of danzón in Veracruz, the Mexican city closely associated with the music-dance genre. Hettie Malcomson draws upon on-site research with semi-professional musicians and amateur dancers to reveal how danzón connects, and does not connect, to blackness, joyousness, nostalgia, ageing, and romance. Challenging pervasive utopian views of danzón, Malcomson uses the idea of ambivalence to explore the frictions and opportunities created by seemingly contrary sentiments, ideas, sensations, and impulses. Interspersed with experimental ethnographic vignettes, her account takes readers into black and mestizo elements of local identity in Veracruz, nostalgic and newer styles of music and dance, and the friendships, romances, and rivalries at the heart of regular danzón performance and its complex social world. Fine-grained and evocative, Danzón Days journeys to one of the genre’s essential cities to provide new perspectives on aging and romance and new explorations of nostalgia and ambivalence.

Set your future self up for success with the “fascinating, profound, and immediately practical guide to shaping your life to come, while living more richly in the moment."―Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks We've all had the desire to travel through time and see what our lives will be like later in life. But while we want the best possible future for ourselves, we often fail to make decisions that would truly make that version of the future a reality: Why do we choose steak over vegetables at dinner, waving off concerns about high cholesterol? Why do we splurge on luxury cars rather than save for retirement? Why can’t we stick to our exercise programs? Why are so many of us so disconnected from our future selves? Based on over a decade of groundbreaking research, Your Future Self is the “entertaining and powerful book” (Carol Dweck, author of Mindset) that explains that in our minds, our future selves often look like strangers. Many of us view the future as incredibly distant, making us more likely to opt for immediate gratification that disregards our health and well-being in the years to come. People who are able to connect with their future selves, however, are better able to balance living for today and planning for tomorrow. “Mind-boggling and soul-stirring” (Daniel H. Pink, author of The Power of Regret), Your Future Self describes the mental mistakes we make in thinking about the future and gives us practical advice for imagining our best future so we can make that vision a reality.
