First Published in 1997. During the middle decades of this century, fundamental research on the Jews of medieval Arabic-speaking lands was carried out by relatively few scholars, whether in Israel or the Western countries. The author of this title sought to remedy this deficit in however small a measure by organizing a Conference on Judaeo-Arabic Studies at Chicago. The collection of Hebrew, Arabic and Jewish manuscript material that was deposited in the Cairo Genizah as early as a thousand years ago is of major significance for our understanding of all aspects of life in the medieval Mediterranean world. This volume presents a selection of papers from the third congress of the Society for Judaeo-Arabic Studies: after introductory material by the editors, it ranges over a wide area of Judaeo-Arabic language and literature, giving the reader a clear impression of recent research in the field. Among the topics covered are the early grammarians, translators and commentators; newly discovered texts of poetry, liturgy and legend; and the religious differences between Jews, Muslims and Christians. These papers, in the main, deal with Medieval Judaeo-Arabic, the linguistic tool of Jewish culture in Arab lands, one of the apogees of Jewish culture in general. It reflects a variety of Middle Arabic, in which Classical Arabic, post-Classical Arabic, [ancient] Neo-Arabic and pseudo-correct features alternate. This ancient Neo-Arabic constitutes the missing link between Classical Arabic and the modern Arabic dialects. Some of the early Judaeo-Arabic documents are spelt in a hebraicized spelling, rather than in standard Judaeo-Arabic orthography. Prof. Joshua Blau, Emeritus, Max Schloessinger Professor of Arabic Languages and Literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, is President of the Academy of Hebrew Language.

This volume contains a study of multiglossia in Judeo-Arabic in addition to a critical edition, annotated translation, and a cultural and a grammatical study of The Purim Scroll of the Cairene Jewish Community, written in 1524 to commemorate the deliverance of the Jews of Cairo from Ahmad Pasha, the governor of Egypt. 'Multiglossia' is a linguistic state in which different varieties of a language exist side by side in a language community and are used under different circumstances or with various functions. 'Judeo-Arabic' has been written and spoken in various forms by Jews throughout the Arabic-speaking world. Part One places the language of the Judeo-Arabic text of the Scroll within the multiglossic history of Judeo-Arabic. Part Two introduces the two critical editions of the Scroll, both in Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic, with the variant readings followed by an annotated translation. Part Three presents a detailed grammar of the Scroll using the framework of Judeo-Arabic multiglossia.
