Planned Violence written by Elleke Boehmer and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-29 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book brings the insights of social geographers and cultural historians into a critical dialogue with literary narratives of urban culture and theories of literary cultural production. In so doing, it explores new ways of conceptualizing the relationship between urban planning, its often violent effects, and literature. Comparing the spatial pasts and presents of the post-imperial and post/colonial cities of London, Delhi and Johannesburg, but also including case studies of other cities, such as Chicago, Belfast, Jerusalem and Mumbai, Planned Violence investigates how that iconic site of modernity, the colonial city, was imagined by its planners — and how this urban imagination, and the cultural and social interventions that arose in response to it, made violence a part of the everyday social life of its subjects. Throughout, however, the collection also explores the extent to which literary and cultural productions might actively resist infrastructures of planned violence, and imagine alternative ways of inhabiting post/colonial city spaces.

A Practical Guide to Teaching Art and Design in the Secondary School bridges the gap between key themes in Art and Design education theory, professional practice and the classroom. This practical and accessible book introduces methods for the delivery of engaging Art and Design lessons that safely and meaningfully address the current key issues in the subject. Each chapter includes tasks to support trainee and early career teachers in implementing, reviewing and adapting their teaching. Chapters cover a range of core approaches to the curriculum such as powerful knowledge for the Art and Design teacher, the place of Art History in the curriculum and critical thinking in Art and Design learning. In addition, emerging cultural and political issues (such as decolonising the Art and Design curriculum, gender and sexuality, anti-ablism, sustainability and well-being) are explored in ways designed to guide teachers towards applying their own unique teaching style. Linking directly to the planning and delivery of the subject in Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, the book is divided into three sections: Imaginative Curiosity for the Art and Design Teacher Epistemological Curiosity for Teachers and Learners Critical Curiosity in the Art and Design Classroom Designed to be used independently or alongside the essential textbook Learning to Teach Art and Design in the Secondary School, this book is packed with practical strategies, teaching ideas and activities in every chapter. The book provides everything trainee and early career teachers need to reflect on and develop their teaching practice, helping them to plan lessons across the subject in a variety of teaching situations.

The physical landscape has been appropriated by artists throughout temporal and spatial history to represent (or present) political, social, and national identities. Artists have long imbued the landscape with personal and public ideologies. Indeed, landscapes can be more than simple representations of scenic beauty, when artists use the genre to convey or reflect upon various political and social concerns important in different periods. This collection of essays brings together the perspectives of scholars from a variety of backgrounds. Subjects range from Venetian Renaissance waterscapes to the rolling farm hills of Grant Wood, and from native Botswana imagery to ecosensitive Florida portraits. These examinations of landscapes consider the rich ideology and iconography that define and redefine peoples and places.
