Akuakultur atau budi daya perairan sistem tambak di Indonesia telah lama berkembang. Saat ini diperkirakan luas tambak Indonesia mencapai sekitar 800.000 ha dari potensi sekitar 1 juta ha, yang digunakan untuk budi daya perikanan. Namun sebagian tambak banyak ditelantarkan oleh pemiliknya karena adanya penurunan produktivitas. Karena itu, perlu diterapkan sistem budi daya yang baik dan tepat sesuai daya dukung lingkungan, serta perlu dilakukan diversifikasi komoditas untuk memutus rantai penyakit. Selain polikultur, penerapan pola tebar gilir dengan mengubah sistem penebaran terus-menerus beralih dengan menebar 2-3 komoditas. Atau penerapan pola budi daya beberapa komodotas dalam petak yang berbeda di satu musim. Penulisan buku ini memperkenalkan komoditas yang dapat dibudidayakan di tambak serta bagaimana mengelolanya agar produktif. Prinsip budi daya komoditas perikanan di tambak tidak berbeda satu dengan yang lainnya. Yang membedakan adalah biologi komoditas tersebut sehingga membutuhkan perlakuan yang berbeda. Buku ini diharapkan mendorong para petambak atau calon petambak untuk mengembangkan lebih dari satu komoditas di tambak, baik dengan pola polikultur, tebar gilir, atau mengusahakan beberapa komoditas dalam satu musim tanam pada beberapa petak tambak.

Potensi produksi akuakultur atau budi daya perairan Indonesia diperkirakan mencapai 57,7 juta ton/tahun. Tahun 2016 produksi akuakultur Indonesia baru mencapi 19,4 juta ton. Angka tersebut masih sangat rendah. Apalagi produksi akuakultur Indonesia didominasi oleh rumput laut, yang mencapai 57%. Dari sisi produktivitas, petani ikan atau pembudidaya di Indonesia masih rendah. Produktivitas pembudidaya Indonesia baru mencapai 5,52 ton/orang/tahun, sedangkan pembudidaya Tiongkok (Republik Rakyat Tiongkok) telah mencapai 10,83 ton/orang/tahun. Sementara produktivitas pembudidaya di negara-negara Eropa telah mencapai 27,8 ton/orang/tahun, pembudidaya di negara-negara Oceania sebesar 32,7 ton/orang/tahun, dan pembudidaya di negara-negara Amerika Utara sudah mencapai 59,3 ton/orang/tahun. Peningkatan produktivitas petani ikan atau pembudidaya akan berdampak langsung pada peningkatan produksi akuakultur. Penyediaan informasi mengenai teknologi budi daya komoditas perikanan laut adalah bagian dari peningkatan produktivitas petani ikan untuk peningkatan produksi akuakultur. Sebanyak 39 komoditas perikanan laut disajikan di dalam buku ini, meliputi pasar, biologi, pembenihan, pendederan, dan pembesaran. Komoditas dimaksud adalah abalon, badut, bandeng, bakau, bawal bintang, beronang, bobara, karang, kakap putih, kakap mata kucing, kakap jenaha, kakap merah, kakap tambak, kepiting bakau, kerang hijau, kerapu batik, kerapu bebek, kerapu cantang, kerapu cantik, kerapu kertang, kerapu lumpur, kerapu macan, kerapu sunu, kima, kobia, kuda laut, lobster, napoleon, penyu, rajungan, rumput laut, sotong, teripang, tiram bakau, tiram mutiara, tuna, udang windu, udang vanname, dan lambouh.(***)

Fish Nutrition aims to present the state of knowledge of basic and applied nutritional requirements of fishes. Most of the information found in this book involves salmonids, their nutrition, and metabolism of nutrients. This is in view of the fact that more research has been done and completed with this fish. Although applied fish nutrition is a very broad field, this book focuses on some of its aspects. These include the classes of nutrients and requirements for several types of fishes. This book comprises of 11 chapters. The first few chapters deal with the general nutrient requirements of fishes. Then, other chapters discuss calorie and energy as well as micro- and macronutrient needs and requirements. The following chapters deal with the non-nutrient components of the diet, or those that influence the characteristics of food products including texture, odor, flavor, and color. Other topics covered are enzymes and systems of intermediary metabolism (Chapter 6); feed formulation and evaluation (Chapter 7); and salmonid husbandry techniques (Chapter 9). Nutritional fish diseases are also discussed in this book. Some of these diseases include thyroid tumor, gill disease, anemia, lipoid liver degeneration, and visceral granuloma. In Chapter 11, the relationship of nutrition and pathology is given emphasis. This chapter also tackles the diet and general fish husbandry. This topic is very important, because an adequate diet for fish husbandry is the foundation of fish farming.
