The world's legal professions have undergone dramatic changes in the 30 years since publication of the landmark three-volume Lawyers in Society, which launched comparative sociological studies of lawyers. This is the first of two volumes in which scholars from a wide range of disciplines, countries and cultures document and analyse those changes. The present volume presents reports on 46 countries, with broad coverage of North America, Western Europe, Latin America, Asia, Australia, North Africa and the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, and former communist countries. These national reports address: the impact of globalisation and neoliberalism on national legal professions (the relationship of lawyers and their professional associations to the state and tensions between state and citizenship); changes in lawyer demography (rapidly growing numbers and the profession's efforts to retain control, the entry of women and obstacles to full gender equality, ethnic diversity); legal education (the proliferation of institutions and pedagogic innovation); the regulation of lawyers; structures of production (especially the growth of large firms and the impact of technology and paraprofessionals); the distribution of lawyers across roles; and access to justice (state-funded legal aid and pro-bono services). Lo primero que llama la atención en estas páginas es la ausencia de lo militar, lo heroico. Son páginas inmersas en la historia intelectual de los venezolanos. Su sola proposición las hace así extremadamente polémicas, porque, por distintos ángulos, se opone a los historiadores tradicionales para quienes la historia venezolana se resuelve entre batallas y baños de sangre, bajo el comando de hombres elevados a la categoría de semidioses (e incluso uno, Bolívar, a la de Dios mismo). Por el otro lado, se opone a positivistas y marxistas, que si bien pretendían sacar la historia de aquel escenario procero, tendían a caer en el extremo contrario, la glorificación de la democracia en cuanto pudiese ella tener de fuerza ciega y de pulsión pasional. Entre esas dos tendencias, la romántica y las dos por el amadamente «científicas» se ha desarrollado la historiografía venezolana en los siglos XIX y XX. Conviene examinar, así sea someramente, cuáles son las bases teóricas, expresas o tácitas, de esas maneras de escribir la historia, y cómo Mijares se opone a ellas. La historiografía romántica proviene, aparte del escaso desarrollo de la disciplina, de dos fuentes: la admiración y el interés político. Los hombres que comienzan a escribir la historia de la Venezuela republicana no pueden menos de sentirse deslumbrados por quienes culminaron, partiendo prácticamente de la nada, una de las aventuras más prodigiosas de la historia. Pero ese hecho guerrero priva por sobre todos los otros elementos que forman la pasta de que está hecha la memoria colectiva.
