This book is the first full-length study of the museum object as a memory medium in history exhibitions about the Nazi era, the Second World War, and the Holocaust. Over recent decades, German and Austrian exhibition-makers have engaged in significant programmes of object collection, often in collaboration with witnesses and descendants. At the same time, exhibition-makers have come to recognise the degree to which the National Socialist era was experienced materially, through the loss, acquisition, imposition, destruction, and re-purposing of objects. In the decades after 1945, encounters with material culture from the Nazi past continued, both within the family and in the public sphere. In analysing how these material engagements are explored in the museum, the book not only illuminates a key aspect of German and Austrian cultural memory but contributes to wider debates about relationships between the human and object worlds.

This volume contains 20 contributions that look at the reactions of the German public in East and West to the important trials against the Nazi leaders in both Allied and German courtrooms which took place during the Allied Occupation and in the early days of the two German states. They point out the differences and interactions that occurred between the prosecution in East and West and show how the public perception developed over time. The methods employed in the West zones were marked by many contradictions, whereas in the Soviet Occupied Territory, following an initial laxness, the courts and public came to serve the purposes of the East German Communist Party (SED).

Die Publikation präsentiert einen diskursgrammatischen Zugriff auf die erinnerungskulturelle Musterbildung zur Kriegszerstörung der Städte Mannheim, Paderborn und Bremen und ihres Aufbaus. Ausgangspunkt der Diskursbeschreibung bilden kollokative Prägungen wie "in Schutt und Asche", "wurde Opfer von Zerstörungen" oder "erfolgte der Wiederaufbau", mit denen diskurs- und städtespezifische Sichtweisen auf historische Ereignisse anders als mit Schlüssel- und Schlagwörtern unbemerkt im Rücken der Akteure entstehen. Das Themenkorpus mit 1,34 Mio. Tokens beinhaltet Passagen aus Abhandlungen und Gebrauchstexten zur Stadtgeschichte zwischen 1945 und 2016, die die Städtezerstörung durch britische und amerikanische Bombentreffer im Zweiten Weltkrieg sowie die Neugestaltung in Text und Bild thematisieren. Die über Korpusberechnungen, korpusgrammatisch motivierte Annotationen und Slotauswertungen ermittelten Kontextualisierungsprofile der Diskurse wurden jeweils in die Belege zurückgespiegelt. Als zentrales Ergebnis zeigt sich anhand der diskursgrammatischen Präferenzen die Herausbildung einer Diskursverschränkung: Zerstörung wird sprachlich so perspektiviert, dass sie aus der Sicht eines gelungenen Neu-/ Wiederaufbaus "erzählt" wird.

Robert G. Moeller is the first historian of modern German women to use social policy as a lens to focus on society's conceptions of gender difference and "woman's place." He investigates the social, economic, and political status of women in West Germany after World War II to reveal how the West Germans, emerging from the rubble of the Third Reich, viewed a reconsideration of gender relations as an essential part of social reconstruction. The debate over "woman's place" in the fifties was part of West Germany's confrontation with the ideological legacy of National Socialism. At the same time, the presence of the Cold War influenced all debates about women and the family. In response to the "woman question," West Germans defined the boundaries not only between women and men, but also between East and West. Moeller's study shows that public policy is a crucial arena where women's needs, capacities, and possibilities are discussed, identified, defined, and reinforced. Nowhere more explicitly than in the first decade of West Germany's history did, in Joan Scott's words, "politics construct gender and gender construct politics." The rapid shift of German elite groups' political loyalties away from Nazism and toward support of the fledgling democracy of the Federal Republic, in spite of the continuity of personnel and professional structures, has surprised many scholars of postwar Germany. The key, Hayse argues, lies in the peculiar and paradoxical legacy of these groups' evasive selective memory, by which they cast themselves as victims of the Third Reich rather than its erstwhile supporters. The avoidance of responsibility for the crimes and excesses of the Third Reich created a need to demonstrate democratic behavior in the post-war public sphere. Ultimately, this self-imposed pressure, while based on a falsified, selective group memory of the recent past, was more important in the long term than the Allies' stringent social change policies.

Bereits am 8. Mai wurde eine Eheschließung registriert, die nach den NS-Rassegesetzen niemals möglich gewesen wäre. Seit dem 14. Mai verkehrten wieder die ersten U-Bahnen. Am 19. Mai nahm der neue Magistrat seine Tätigkeit auf. Der Aufbau der Gerichtsbarkeit war zum 1. Juni abgeschlossen, was auch überaus notwendig war, denn in der ausgebluteten, ausgehungerten, zerbombten Stadt wurde geplündert, geraubt und gemordet. Entlang von Kriminalfällen zeichnet Ernst Reuß den Neuaufbau der Berliner Justiz nach und vermittelt so ein lebendiges Bild der Nachkriegszeit. Er stellt den Machtkampf zwischen den einstmals Alliierten im beginnenden Kalten Krieg dar und gibt Einblick in den von Not geprägten Alltag der hungernden und frierenden Berliner.
