Manuscripts containing Greek medical texts were inventoried by author and work at the beginning of the 20th century by a group of philologists under the direction of Hermann Diels. Useful as it was - and will continue to be – Diels’ catalogue omitted authors and works, misidentified manuscripts, and overlooked codices. Furthermore, since the publication of the catalogue, some libraries have adopted a new system of classification, manuscripts have been destroyed, items have changed location, and new ones have come to light. The present Census is a checklist of the Greek medical manuscripts currently known in collections worldwide. It is both an amended and updated index of Diels’ catalogue, and a list of the items missed or overlooked in Diels, or located since. Although it does not supersede Diels’ catalogue, it is the indispensable instrument for a New Diels, and will be the reference for years to come for any new critical edition and medico-historical research based on manuscripts, besides providing the basis for a broad range of other historical inquiries, from codicology to the history of medicine and science, including Byzantine intellectual history, Renaissance studies and humanism, history of the book and early printing, and the history of medical philology and learning.

English summary: The focus of scientific research on palaeography and codicology at the Institute of Byzantine Studies lies among others on the analysis of Greek manuscripts of the Austrian National Library for the project Scribes of Greek Manuscripts in Austria: Signed and dated manuscripts, sorted by place of production and style. As regards Byzantine and Post-Byzantine time the intensive research in the topic of Greek palaeography of the last decades was ground-breaking and gave a basic impetus to this science the Viennese School of Palaeography has shaped essentially by the works of Herbert Hunger as well as integrated in its studies. The present volume of Miscellanea starts a series of studies to various manuscripts exceeding the description in a future repertory of Viennese Greek manuscripts; therefore these results and studies are published as accompanying miscellanea. At the same time the series is intended to centralize studies on Viennese Greek manuscripts. The series will appear in casual sequence as monograph or collection of articles. The first volume is dedicated to the following themes: palimpsests, miscellaneous codices, scholars' manuscripts of the 14th century (exemplified by Manuel Meligalas), scribes' activity in the 15th century (exemplified by Zacharias Kallierges), catenae, and forgeries of Greek manuscripts in modern times (exemplified by Konstantinos Simonides). German description: Im Mittelpunkt des Forschungsschwerpunktes Palaographie und Kodikologie des Institutes fur Byzanzforschung steht u.a. die Aufarbeitung griechischer Handschriften der Osterreichischen Nationalbibliothek fur das Projekt Die Schreiber der griechischen Handschriften Osterreichs: Subskribierte, datierte, lokalisierte und atelier- bzw. stilspezifische Codices. Die intensive Forschung auf dem Gebiet der griechischen Palaographie byzantinischer und postbyzantinischer Zeit der letzten Jahrzehnte war wegweisend und hat der Wissenschaft entscheidende Impulse gegeben, die auch die aWiener Schule mitgepragt und in ihre Studien aufgenommen hat.
