"This study analyses the detectable remaining stock of the legendary Greek library of King Matthias Corvinus (1443-1490) in the Austrian National Library. In contrast to the Latin manuscripts of the Bibliotheca Corvina, the reconstruction of the Greek fundus confronts its research with a big problem as these manuscripts contain neither the usual ornamental pages nor the royal coat of arms nor were they commissioned in scriptoria, but are preserved from various centuries in very different appearance. Only two cases are a sure due to the typical Corvinian cover. In addition to a thorough analysis of the manuscripts which can be assigned to the library on the basis of reports of the humanists at the turn from the 15th to the 16th century, the impact of the burgeoning transalpine Greek humanism on Viennese scholars and their access to libraries with Greek stock is investigated. This helps also to construct a panorama of Greek studies in Vienna in the late 15th and early 16th century. The exponents of this new direction of bilingual humanism are studied in view of their education, their editorial activities, their (private) library stocks and their access to manuscripts (or prints [i.e. printed books])."--Back cover.

English summary: The focus of scientific research on palaeography and codicology at the Institute of Byzantine Studies lies among others on the analysis of Greek manuscripts of the Austrian National Library for the project Scribes of Greek Manuscripts in Austria: Signed and dated manuscripts, sorted by place of production and style. As regards Byzantine and Post-Byzantine time the intensive research in the topic of Greek palaeography of the last decades was ground-breaking and gave a basic impetus to this science the Viennese School of Palaeography has shaped essentially by the works of Herbert Hunger as well as integrated in its studies. The present volume of Miscellanea starts a series of studies to various manuscripts exceeding the description in a future repertory of Viennese Greek manuscripts; therefore these results and studies are published as accompanying miscellanea. At the same time the series is intended to centralize studies on Viennese Greek manuscripts. The series will appear in casual sequence as monograph or collection of articles. The first volume is dedicated to the following themes: palimpsests, miscellaneous codices, scholars' manuscripts of the 14th century (exemplified by Manuel Meligalas), scribes' activity in the 15th century (exemplified by Zacharias Kallierges), catenae, and forgeries of Greek manuscripts in modern times (exemplified by Konstantinos Simonides). During the late Byzantine period (1261-1453), a significant number of texts were translated from Latin, but also from Arabic and other languages, into Greek. Most of them are still unedited or available in editions that do not meet the modern academic criteria. Nowadays, these translations are attracting scholarly attention, as it is widely recognized that, besides their philological importance per se, they can shed light on the cultural interactions between late Byzantines and their neighbours or predecessors. To address this desideratum, this volume focuses on the cultural context, the translators and the texts produced during the Palaeologan era, extending as well till the end of 15th c. in ex-Byzantine territories. By shedding light on the translation activity of late Byzantine scholars, this volume aims at revealing the cultural aspect of late Byzantine openness to its neighbours.

In twelfth-century Byzantium, poetry played a key part in various contexts of textual production and consumption. One of the leading poets of this period was Theodoros Prodromos, whose surviving corpus comprises approximately 17,000 verses. Even though most of his poetry has been presented in modern critical editions, a group of his works has been overlooked by modern philologists and literary scholars alike. The selected corpus--conventionally designated as Miscellaneous Poems--consists of texts on various themes and in a wide range of genres, ranging from cycles of religious and secular epigrams to riddles, ethopoiiai, and works of a self-referential and essayistic nature. This book includes the first critical edition and study of these poems, accompanied by English translations and commentaries. Their study contributes to a more nuanced picture of Prodromos' intellectual profile, expanding his image as the 'poet laureate' of the Komnenian court and providing entirely new insights into his activity in the different settings of Constantinopolitan intellectual life. The book also sheds new light on the complex relationship between patronage and other aspects of literary activity and the circulation of the same text in different performative contexts.

The Bible In Byzantium written by Agnethe Siquans and has been published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-12 with Religion categories.

The Bible is the foundational text for the Byzantine Empire. The papers of this volume explore its reception through appropriation, adaptation and interpretation as articulated in all aspects of Byzantine society. Several sessions at the ISBL held in Vienna, 6 to 10 July 2014 on 'The Reception of the Bible in Greco-Roman Tradition,' 'The Bible between Jews and Christians in Byzantium,' 'Biblical Scholarship in Byzantium,' and 'Biblical Foundations of Byzantine Identity and Culture' built the basis of this volume. Various angles shed light on the Byzantine experience of the Bible. The wide range of source materials that inform the contributions to this volume—from manuscripts and military handbooks to lead seals and pilgrim guides— allows insights into a vivid liturgical tradition, which shapes Orthodox Christianity up today. As a thoroughly Christianized society, the Bible had sunk deep into the cultural DNA of Byzantium. The volume shows the multitude of strategies for the engagement with the Biblical text and the manifold ways in which the Bible message was experienced, articulated and brought to life on a daily basis.
