Henning van den Brink untersucht den Nutzen kultureller Bildung für Kinder mithilfe der sozialpädagogischen Nutzerforschung. Auf der Grundlage von Interviews mit an einem Musical-Projekt beteiligten Grundschülerinnen und -schülern arbeitet er heraus, wie sich die Kinder individuelle und kollektive Gebrauchswerte aneignen. Die Arbeit in der Gruppe und als Gruppe nimmt dabei eine Schlüsselrolle ein. Die Einbettung der künstlerischen Aktivität in ein solidarisches Gruppengeschehen eröffnet den Kindern neue Möglichkeiten für ästhetische Erfahrungen und den Aufbau von Selbstwirksamkeit. Dies geschieht häufig in Verbindung mit der Bewältigung zwischenzeitlicher Krisen, die in den selbst geschaffenen Räumen für partizipative Gestaltungs- und Aushandlungsprozesse entstehen.

Kulturelle Bildung kann maßgeblich die Persönlichkeitsentwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen unterstützen. Im Projekt InKuBi wurde ein Indikatorenset entwickelt, mit dem Entwicklungen in diesem Bereich analysiert werden können. Kinder und Jugendliche können sich durch kreatives Gestalten und die aktive Rezeption von Kunst und Kultur unabhängig von ihrem familiären, kulturellen, sozialen und ökonomischen Hintergrund mit der Welt auseinandersetzen. Schon lange fördert der Bund die kulturelle Bildung im Programm "Kultur macht stark". Bisher lagen aber keine belastbaren Daten zum Status quo und zu Entwicklungen im Rahmen des Programms vor. Um mehr Steuerungswissen zu generieren, wurde im Projekt InKuBi ein exemplarisches Indikatorenset entwickelt. Die Indikatoren orientieren sich an der Systematik des nationalen Bildungsberichts und legen den Grundstein für ein Monitoringsystem kultureller Bildung in Deutschland. Die Studie, die von der Stiftung Mercator gefördert wurde, zeigt die Entstehung und die Grundlagen des Indikatorensets sowie die Bedeutung einer datengestützten Gesamtschau für die kulturelle Bildung im Rahmen eines bundesweiten Bildungsmonitorings.

In this book, new approaches are presented for detecting and extracting simultaneously relevant and novel information from unstructured text documents. A major contribution of these approaches is that the information already provided and the extracted information are modeled semantically. This leads to the following benefits: (a) ambiguities in the language can be resolved; (b) the exact information needs regarding relevance and novelty can be specified; and (c) knowledge graphs can be incorporated. More specifically, this book presents the following scientific contributions: 1. An assessment of the suitability of existing large knowledge graphs (namely, DBpedia, Freebase, OpenCyc, Wikidata, and YAGO) for the task of detecting novel information in text documents. 2. A description of an approach by which emerging entities that are missing in a knowledge graph are detected in a stream of text documents. 3. A suggestion for an approach to extracting novel, relevant, semantically-structured statements from text documents. The developed approaches are suitable for the recommendation of emerging entities and novel statements respectively, for the purpose of knowledge graph population, and for providing assistance to users requiring novel information, such as journalists and technology scouts.

Cryptography, the art and science of creating secret codes, and cryptanalysis, the art and science of breaking secret codes, underwent a similar and parallel course during history. Both fields evolved from manual encryption methods and manual codebreaking techniques, to cipher machines and codebreaking machines in the first half of the 20th century, and finally to computerbased encryption and cryptanalysis from the second half of the 20th century. However, despite the advent of modern computing technology, some of the more challenging classical cipher systems and machines have not yet been successfully cryptanalyzed. For others, cryptanalytic methods exist, but only for special and advantageous cases, such as when large amounts of ciphertext are available. Starting from the 1990s, local search metaheuristics such as hill climbing, genetic algorithms, and simulated annealing have been employed, and in some cases, successfully, for the cryptanalysis of several classical ciphers. In most cases, however, results were mixed, and the application of such methods rather limited in their scope and performance. In this work, a robust framework and methodology for the cryptanalysis of classical ciphers using local search metaheuristics, mainly hill climbing and simulated annealing, is described. In an extensive set of case studies conducted as part of this research, this new methodology has been validated and demonstrated as highly effective for the cryptanalysis of several challenging cipher systems and machines, which could not be effectively cryptanalyzed before, and with drastic improvements compared to previously published methods. This work also led to the decipherment of original encrypted messages from WWI, and to the solution, for the first time, of several public cryptographic challenges.
