Project Report from the year 2016 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 10.00, , course: BE MECHANICAL, language: English, abstract: Natural resources conservation has become a requirement in today’s world, mainly in the area of new technology. In many rolling applications maximum energy is lost during deceleration or braking. This problem has been fixed with the introduction of regenerative braking. The Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) is a system for recovering the moving vehicle's kinetic energy under braking and also to utilize the usual loss in kinetic energy. When riding a bicycle, a great amount of kinetic energy is lost while braking, making start up fairly difficult. Here we used the mechanical kinetic energy recovery system by means of a flywheel to store the energy which is normally lost during braking, and reuse it to help propel the rider when starting. The rider can charge the flywheel when slowing or descending a hill and boost the bike when accelerating or climbing a hill. The flywheel increases maximum acceleration and can perform pedal energy savings during a ride where speeds are between 6 and 5 kmph.

Kinetic Energy Storage: Theory and Practice of Advanced Flywheel Systems focuses on the use of flywheel systems in storing energy. The book first gives an introduction to the use of flywheels, including prehistory to the Roman civilization, Christian era to the industrial revolution, and middle of the 19th century to 1960. The text then examines the application of flywheel energy storage systems. Basic parameters and definitions, advantages and disadvantages, economic considerations, road vehicle applications, and applications for fixed machines are considered. The book also evaluates the flywheel, including materials, radial bar and filament flywheel, composite material disc flywheel, rotor stress analysis, and flywheel testing. The text also discusses housing and vacuum systems and flywheel suspension and transmission systems. Aerodynamic drag on wheels, burst containment, types of bearings, rotor dynamics, dampers, and types of transmissions are described. The text is a vital source of information for readers wanting to explore the composition and functions of flywheels.

What Is Flywheel Energy Storage The flywheel energy storage (FES) system works by keeping the energy in the system as rotational energy while simultaneously increasing the speed of a rotor (the flywheel) to an extremely high rate. When energy is removed from the system, the rotating speed of the flywheel slows down as a direct result of the theory of energy conservation. On the other hand, when energy is added to the system, the flywheel's rotational speed rises as a direct result of the principle of energy conservation. Sport is undergoing a global technological revolution. Year on year, records are smashed, equipment gets more sophisticated, facilities improve almost beyond recognition. These changes are impacting on all areas of sport, from shoes to cycles and stadia. Is this making sport more exciting for participants and spectators? Or are talent and determination becoming secondary to money and technology, devaluing honest competition? In Higher, Further, Faster..., Stewart Ross looks at these questions and much more. Starting with a description of technology's impact on elements common to various sports, such as bats, balls, pitches and special clothing, he then examines the controversies that arise almost daily, from golf club technology to the use of Hawk-eye in tennis. He also looks ahead to the techno-future of major sports such as football, tennis, golf, cricket, cycling and motor sport, and asks where they are going: Are referees and umpires becoming redundant? If drugs will always win, do we really have a choice about using them? Will we ever see a Super-Human Olympics? Is modern professional sport more about technology than talent? Can athletes from the developing world ever hope to compete in modern sport? This book is a must-read for all participants and fans who want to understand the technological upheaval that is shaking modern sport to its very foundations. One thing's for sure: whether you find it stimulating or just plain scary, the future will be very, very different... About the author Stewart Ross is a full-time writer with some 200 published titles to his credit. He is also an occasional journalist and broadcaster, a frequent lecturer, notably on the QE2 and at ICES (La Roche sur Yon, France, where he lectures to science students), and a much sought-after presenter of workshops to schools and adult groups. www.stewartross.net

A kinetic energy recover system (KERS) captures the kinetic energy that results when brakes are applied to a moving vehicle. The recovered energy can be stored in a flywheel or battery and used later, to help boost acceleration. KERS helps transfer what was formerly wasted energy into useful energy. In 2009, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) began allowing KERS to be used in Formula One (F1) competition. Still considered experimental, this technology is undergoing development in the racing world but has yet to become mainstream for production vehicles. The Introduction of this book details the theory behind the KERS concept. It describes how kinetic energy can be recovered, and the mechanical and electric systems for storing it. Flybrid systems are highlighted since they are the most popular KERS developed thus far. The KERS of two racing vehicles are profiled: the Dyson Lola LMP1 and Audi R18 e-tron Quattro. Four SAE technical papers follow the preface and focus on the use of KERS technology in F1 racing. The first paper examines the factors that influence hybrid performance and enable optimization for different racing circuits. The second paper describes a Flybrid KERS designed for the 2009 F1 season. The third paper considers the development of an electric KERS for the 2009 F1 season. The fourth paper presents the challenges and opportunities of the 2014 F1 engine and powertrain rules, particularly as they pertain to KERS. This book has been published for automotive engineers who are interested in hybrid systems, energy recovery, regenerative braking, and improving acceleration. It will also be useful for powertrain designers, researchers, academics, and motorsports professionals (race engineers, team managers, and technology practitioners who design and build racing powertrains).

Bicycles have been a common device to enhance physical fitness level in gyms and training centers along with solid use in competitive sport. For that reason, biomechanics of cycling has grown as a research field with many publications addressing different perspective of the interaction between the cyclist and his bicycle. The most common end point of research on biomechanics of cycling is optimization of performance and reduction of injury risk. One goal of this book is to meet the growing need for a comprehensive presentation of contemporary knowledge on biomechanics of cycling which will positively influence the activity of cycling in a global fashion. In order to accomplish this purpose, ten chapters are presented with focus on varying methods for biomechanical analysis of cycling motion. The introduction section provides an overview of the main methods for assessment of cycling motion, including motion analysis, pedal force measurements, muscle activation, anthropometry and joint kinetics. These methods are discussed in depth in individual chapters followed by chapters on characteristics of bicycles and potential perspectives to improve their configuration in order to improve performance of cyclists and reduce their overuse injury risk. Moreover, a preliminary method to train technique in cyclists is shown. A final chapter provides authors perspective on the upcoming technology that should be effective in helping training of cyclists.
