A Touch of Zen is one of the first Chinese-language films to gain recognition in an international film festival (the Grand Prix at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival), creating the generic mould for the "crossover" success of Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in 2000. The film has achieved a cult status over the years but little has been written about it. This first book-length study of the classic martial arts film therefore redresses its critical neglect, and explores its multi-leveled dimensions and mysteries. One of the central features of the film is the enigmatic knight-lady (xia nü) whose quest for revenge leads her to cross paths with a poor scholar whose interest in military strategy seals their alliance. Teo discusses the psychological manifestations and implications of this relationship and concludes that the film's continuing relevance lies in its portrait of sexuality and the feminist desires of the heroine. Teo also analyzes the film's form as an action piece and the director's preoccupation with Zen as a creative inspiration and as a subject in its own right. As such, he argues that the film is a highly unconventional and idiosyncratic work which attempts to transcend its own genre and reach the heights of universal transcendence. Teo grounds his study in both Western and Chinese literary sources, providing a broad and comprehensive treatise based on the film's narrative concepts and symbols.

Citing China explores the role film plays in creating a common ground for the exchange of political and aesthetic ideas between China and the rest of the world. It does so by examining the depiction of China in contemporary film, looking at how global filmmakers “cite” China on screen. Author Gina Marchetti’s aim is not to point to how China continues to function as a metaphor or allusion that has little to do with the geopolitical actualities of contemporary China. Rather, she highlights China’s position within global film culture, examining how cinematic quotations link current films to past political movements and unresolved social issues in a continuing multidirectional conversation. Marchetti covers a wide range of cinematic encounters across the China-West divide. She looks closely at specific movements in world film history and at key films that have influenced the way “China” is depicted in global cinema today, from popular entertainment to international art cinema, the DV revolution, video activism, and the emergence of “festival films.” Marchetti first considers contemporary Chinese-language cinema (Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-Hsien); she then turns to Italian Neorealism and its importance to the Chinese Sixth Generation (Jia Zhangke) and the French New Wave’s ripple effect on filmmakers associated with the Hong Kong New Wave and Taiwan New Cinema (Ann Hui, Evans Chan). As the People’s Republic of China has gained increased global economic clout, filmmakers draw on Euro-American formulae (Bruce Lee, Clara Law) to attract new viewers and define cinematic pleasures for new audiences on the other side of the earth. The book concludes with a consideration of the role film festivals, women filmmakers, and emerging audiences play in the new world of global cinema. Citing China offers a framework for examining cinematic influence as a dynamic and multidirectional process. It is carefully researched, theoretically sophisticated, and animated by detailed and historically nuanced studies of individual films, making clear just how much a part of global film culture today’s China is. Responding to a lack of studies on the film festival’s role in the production of cultural memory, this book explores different parameters through which film festivals shape our reception and memories of films. By focusing on two Asian American film festivals, this book analyzes the frames of memory that festivals create for their films, constructed through and circulated by the various festival media. It further establishes that festival locations—both cities and screening venues—play a significant role in shaping our experience of films. Finally, it shows that festivals produce performances which help guide audiences towards certain readings and direct the film’s role as a memory object. Bringing together film festival studies and memory studies, 'Asian American Film Festivals' offers a mixed-methods approach with which to explore the film festival phenomenon, thus shedding light on the complex dynamics of frames, locations, and performances shaping the festival’s memory practices. It also draws attention to the understudied genre of Asian American film festivals, showing how these festivals actively engage in constructing and performing a minority group’s collective identity and memory.
