Kleine Formen sind jüngst in das Blickfeld literatur-, medien- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen geraten. Dabei wird oft das politische Potenzial kleiner Formen verkannt. Eingebettet in fluide Publikationsorgane und insbesondere im digitalen Kontext können sie unterschwellig kollektive Dynamiken bündeln, kritisch-subversiv den gesellschaftspolitischen Status quo infrage stellen und alternative Gemeinschaftsbildung entwerfen – auch in gattungspolitischer Hinsicht: So lenkt das Prekäre und Randständige kleiner Formen den Blick auf die Unabgeschlossenheit von Gattungen und lässt die dynamischen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Genres, Schreibweisen und Medien hervortreten. In drei Sektionen behandelt der Band die politische Kommunikation kleiner Formen: als Teil einer digitalen Streit- und Protestkultur; als diskursive Plattform für Zeitgeschichte sowie als kreative Ausdrucksregime, die – etwa als Paratexte – auch formalästhetisch hegemoniale Sichtweisen und Wahrnehmungsmodi entthronen können. Es sind Fragen von ästhetischer und politischer Gemeinschaftsbildung, die der Sammelband epochen- und medienübergreifend behandeln möchte und die interdisziplinäre Anschlüsse für die Forschung bilden.

Alexander Kluge’s revolutionary storytelling for the 21st-century pivots on the production of anti-realist hope under conditions of real catastrophe. Rather than relying on possibility alone, his experimental miniatures engender counterfactual horizons of futurity that are made incrementally accessible to lived experience through narrative form. Highly proficient speakers of a second language who began acquisition as adults are rarely the object of second language acquisition research. In the study described in this book, the speech of 36 advanced learners of German, 20 of whom were considered to have "near-native" proficiency was recorded, transcribed and analyzed according to the "Quaestio Model". The focus of the study was the information structure of the learners' spoken texts and its implications for word order. The study revealed differences in the information structure of texts of learners and native German speakers even for those learners whose performance was nearly indistinguishable from L1 German speakers. The author discusses possible reasons for these differences, suggests implications for second language acquisition theory and draws up lesson plans for using the insights brought forth by the study for the second language and translation classrooms.

Over the past decade and a half, Germany has experienced a period of political and cultural turbulence which many have attributed to the combined challenges of unification and globalisation. In response to growing exposure to global markets, politics and migration debates about identity have increasingly been renationalised. At the same time, there has been a notable reappraisal in Germany (and in German Studies) of the regional and global as spaces for the construction of identity. This volume sets out to explore these complex and at times contradictory trends, focusing in particular on developments in Germany since the 1970s, although chapters treating earlier periods are also included. The volume brings together British, Irish, German, Canadian and American scholars working in the field, and resulted from a conference organised by Women in German Studies at the University of Bath. The first section is primarily concerned with the specifically German concept of locality known as Heimat and its changing relationship with the global. Included are explorations of the writings of Kafka, Bachmann, Johnson, Sell, Wolf, Brinkmann and Jelinek amongst others as well as films by Schlöndorff and Steyerl. The second section focuses on the impact of the global on institutions and rituals such as commemoration, memorialisation, and architecture, which have traditionally been influential in shaping national self-images. Overall, this volume concludes that the nature of the relationship to the local has fundamentally changed under the impact of globalisation.
