In addition to investments in human resources and leveraging the role information technology, they have begun to devote considerable attention to harnessing the explicit and tacit knowledge they posses.

World Development Report 1998-1999, now in its twenty-first edition, focuses on the role of knowledge and information as a factor of development, including the important trade-offs in strategies and policies and many other challenges. It examines such important questions as why some developing countries have been able to exploit the rapidly increasing stock of global knowledge more than others and what can be done to help those falling behind. The Report also looks at the challenge of finding a balance between private initiative and public intervention that would encourage innovation and manage attendant risks. It deals with international assistance and international organizations, which can help develop understanding about these complex processes, help transfer lessons of development experience across countries, and help finance crucial knowledge investments of importance to developing countries. Known as the standard reference for international economic data, the World Development Report 1998-1999 provides a set of Selected World Development Indicators as an appendix, presenting social and economic statistics for more than 200 countries.

In 1996, the World Bank President, James Wolfensohn, declared that his organization would henceforth be 'the knowledge bank'. This marked the beginning of a new discourse of knowledge-based aid, which has spread rapidly across the development field. This book is the first detailed attempt to analyse this new discourse. Through an examination of four agencies -- the World Bank, the British Department for International Development, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency -- the book explores what this new approach to aid means in both theory and practice. It concludes that too much emphasis has been on developing capacity within agencies rather than addressing the expressed needs of Southern 'partners'. It also questions whether knowledge-based aid leads to greater agency certainty about what constitutes good development.

Knowledge-for-development is under-theorised and under-researched within development studies, but as a set of policy objectives it is thriving within development practice. Donors and other agencies are striving to improve the flow of information within and between decision-makers and so-called ‘poor and marginalized groups’ in order to promote economic and social development, including the empowerment of women. Gender, Power and Knowledge for Development questions the assumptions and practice of the knowledge-for-development industry. Using a qualitative, multi-site ethnographical study of a Northern-based gender information service and its ‘beneficiaries’ in India, the book queries the utility of the knowledge paradigm itself and the underlying assumption that a knowledge deficit exists in the Global South. It questions the value of practices designed to address this presumed deficit that seek to increase information without addressing the specific problems of the knowledge systems being targeted for support. After reviewing the evidence, the book recommends that international organisations, governments and practitioners move away from the belief that information intermediaries can employ progressive correctives to ‘tinker at the edges’ and thus resolve the shortcomings of on-going attempts to use knowledge alone as a driver of development. Gender, Power and Knowledge for Development will be of great interest to researchers, students in development studies, gender studies, and communication studies as well as INGOs, donor agencies and groups engaged in information for development (i4D), ICT for development (ICT4D), Tech4Dev, knowledge mobilization and knowledge-for-development (K4D).

Knowledge management, good governance, and sustainable development are the three essential components for the prosperity of any community, and they are inter-related in terms of scope and nature. In the twenty-first century, civilization is marching toward building a knowledge-based society where knowledge will be the driving force for the development of all sectors. Knowledge will also lead to invention, innovation, modernization, entrepreneurship, dynamism, and sustainability of the economy. Knowledge management plays a key role in any society for managing, generating, sharing, and utilizing knowledge for the advancement and well-being of its citizens. The prosperity of the society also largely depends on good governance in which knowledge management plays a vital role at all levels of bureaucracy. Again, in achieving sustainable development, which is about finding better ways of doing things both for the future and the present, knowledge management and good governance are mandatory. This book brings these three burning issues under one umbrella. The book is divided into two broad and logical heading: Information and Knowledge Management and Governance and Development. Please note: This edition is custom published for Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre and East West University, Dhaka. Not for sale in any other region.

Synthesizing cutting-edge research from multiple disciplines, this book explores how young children acquire knowledge in the "real world" and describes practical applications for early childhood classrooms. The breadth and depth of a child's knowledge base are important predictors of later literacy development and academic achievement. Leading scholars describe the processes by which preschoolers and primary-grade students acquire knowledge through firsthand experiences, play, interactions with parents and teachers, storybooks, and a range of media. Chapters on exemplary instructional strategies vividly show what teachers can do to build children's content knowledge while also promoting core literacy skills.
