In der Phraseologieforschung, der Fremdsprachendidaktik und der Metalexikographie werden Kollokationen zumeiste als Elemente der langue aufgefaßt und im Graubereich zwischen freien Wortverbindungen und Phrasemen angesiedelt. Wenig Gemeinsamkeiten mit dieser Auffassung zeigt die kollokationstheorie des britischen Kontextualismus, die zum Ausgangspunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit genommen wurde. Kollokationen in diesem Sinne basieren, gemäß dem kontextualistischen Postulat, nur den tatsächlichen Sprachgebrauch zu untersuchen, auf Elementen der parole. Sie werden zu Zwecken lexikalischer Analyse eigens gebildet und bestehen aus beliebigen Zusammenfassungen sprachlicher Einheiten, die in konkreten Texten in syntagmatischer Nähe zueinander vorkommen. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die Kollokationstheorie des Kontextualismus in ein operationales lexikalisches Sprachanalysenmodell, welches auch für die maschinelle Sprachverarbeitung nutzbar ist, umzusetzen. Dieses Sprachanalysemodell soll insbesondere dazu dienen, die maschinelle Disambiguierung im Falle polysemer oder homonymer Wörter sowie die maschinelle Identifizierung von Phrasemen - Aufgaben, die die maschinelle Sprachverarbeitung noch immer vor große Probleme stellen - handhabbarer zu machen. Bisherige Problemlösungsstrategien bestanden vor allem darin, entweder Restriktionen für die Textproduktion vorzusehen oder spezielle Basen zur Repräsentation sprachexternen Wissens zu kompilieren. Das hier entwickelte Analysemodell stützt sich dagegen auf die Annahme, daß die Identifizierung und Charakterisierung sprachlicher Einheiten allein auf der Grundlage des kollokativen Verhaltens von Formativen in konkreten Texten, wie es sich anhand von Häufigkeit und Signifikanz ihres Miteinandervorkommens bestimmen läßt, geleistet werden kann. Die Miteinbeziehung von Wissen über außersprachliche Entitäten wird somit nicht als notwendig erachtet. Endergebnis eines Analyseverfahrens der hier projektierten Form ist ein lexikalisches Netz, das im Anschluß als Datenbasis für vielerlei Arten von Textgenerierungs- und Textanalyseaufgaben genutzt werden kann.

Computers offer new perspectives in the study of language, allowing us to see phenomena that previously remained obscure because of the limitations of our vantage points. It is not uncommon for computers to be likened to the telescope, or microscope, in this respect. In this pioneering computer-assisted study of translation, Dorothy Kenny suggests another image, that of the kaleidoscope: playful changes of perspective using corpus-processing software allow textual patterns to come into focus and then recede again as others take their place. And against the background of repeated patterns in a corpus, creative uses of language gain a particular prominence. In Lexis and Creativity in Translation, Kenny monitors the translation of creative source-text word forms and collocations uncovered in a specially constructed German-English parallel corpus of literary texts. Using an abundance of examples, she reveals evidence of both normalization and ingenious creativity in translation. Approaching collocations from a usage-based perspective, this study investigates how the development of collocational proficiency in first and second language attainment could be explained. Against the background of recent approaches in cognitive linguistics such as construction grammar and Complex Adaptive Systems it argues that collocations should not be regarded as idiosyncratic phraseological items, which, depending on their degree of fixedness and semantic opaqueness, can be classified along a gradient of idiomaticity. Thus, this study regards collocations as dynamic linguistic phenomena, which could be seen as subject to constant change rather than more or less static combinations with an additional level of syntagmatic and paradigmatic restrictions. Furthermore it explores how creative changes and alternations of collocations can be used to learn more about a speakers cognitive processing of these phraseological phenomena and how this process might be influenced by language external factors such as age, education or context.

This study is concerned with the use of the English modals (may, might,can, could, shall, should, will, would and must) in adverbial, relative and complement clauses. It employs synchronic data from the British National Corpus and quantitative methods to investigate similarities and differences between the core modals, as well as modal-specific preferences in subordinate clauses. The main finding is that modal verbs in subordinate clauses may be conceived of as meso-constructions and that they qualify as micro-constructions once further syntagmatic features are considered. This allows for distinguishing modal verb phrases with different degrees of complexity, schematicity, productivity and subjectivity. Further applications give us insights into collocations, modal harmony, semantic preference, and the attraction of dynamic meaning to relative clauses.

Variation is the norm in language. It is the universal trait that has never been embarrassed by counterexamples. As language is a joint product of human cognition and human society, the dimensions underlying language variation could potentially reveal the complexity of the human mind and defines us of what we are as cognitive and social beings, be it Austrians speaking German, or Nepalis speaking Dumi. Die Studie befasst sich schwerpunktmäßig mit der Frage, welche Rolle Kollokationen bei der Benutzung zweisprachiger Wörterbücher spielen und inwieweit den Bedürfnissen des Fremdsprachenlerners bei der Wörterbuchgestaltung Rechnung getragen wird. Der zentrale Teil besteht in einer eingehenden Analyse der Kollokationspraxis wichtiger deutsch-englischer Nachschlagewerke: Die Wörterbuchteile aus verschiedenen Verlagen werden daraufhin untersucht, ob sie Kollokationen in ausreichendem Maße verzeichnen und auf welche Art und Weise diese Wortverbindungen angegeben sind. Um eine fundierte Gegenüberstellung der ausgewählten Wörterbücher zu ermöglichen, wird ein aus etwa zweihundert Kollokationen bestehendes Vergleichskorpus zusammengestellt; besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei auch der Frage, inwieweit es möglich ist, lexikografisch verwertbare Kollokationen aus Korpora zu extrahieren. Die Ergebnisse des Vergleichs sind insofern überraschend, als sich zwischen den Wörterbüchern signifikante Unterschiede ergeben. Anhand exemplarischer Artikel werden Schwächen und Vorzüge der einzelnen Nachschlagewerke verdeutlicht. Diesem Wörterbuchvergleich gehen zwei theoretische Kapitel voran, von denen eines verschiedene Ansätze der Kollokationsforschung und eines Fragestellungen der zweisprachigen Lexikografie zum Gegenstand hat. Was die konkurrierenden Kollokationstheorien betrifft, werden in erster Linie die lexikografisch-didaktisch ausgerichtete Vorstellung Hausmanns und der formal-statistische Kollokationsbegriff des britischen Kontextualismus thematisiert.
