From government eavesdropping to Internet crime, reality TV to computer-mediated communication and mobile telephones, the face of communication has fundamentally changed. The contingencies and complexities of communication can be witnessed in old and new media, in changing patterns of face-to-face interactions and the pluralization of the self and blurring of the distinction between the real and virtual. To date, theories of interaction have been slow to conceptualize communication in terms of its instabilities. Social communication models remain heavily indebted to an interaction paradigm which is often intuitive, epistemologically conservative and even a-critical. By contrast, an interdisciplinary programme in communication covers a complex field which requires the broadest possible range of approaches beyond current disciplinary confines. This collection seeks to examine some of the implications for our understanding of interaction when communication is conceptualized as a complex uncertainty.

Solidarität entstand als ‚Kampfbegriff’ der sich neu etablierenden Soziologie gegenüber den damaligen Handlungs- und Ordnungsmodellen der Ökonomie. Insbesondere am Problem, wie Akteure mit divergierenden und möglicherweise antagonistischen Zielen kooperieren, entwickelte die Soziologie eigene Konzepte zu Handlungsbegrenzungen oder Institutionen. Das Buch rekonstruiert soziologische und ökonomische Begründungen von Institutionen und zeigt die Leistungen wie auch die Engführungen der Durkheim-Parsons-Tradition einerseits, der neueren ökonomischen Sozialtheorie andererseits. Es zeigt, dass beide Traditionen von der Unvollständigkeit der Theorie rationalen Handelns ausgehen und mit ganz unterschiedlich konzipierten ‚Institutionen’ diese Lücke füllen. Beide Ordnungsdiskurse prägen auch die Sicht des Sozialstaats, der Solidarität in der modernen Gesellschaft verkörpert, weil es um die Begrenzung eigennutzorientierten Verhaltens und um Kooperation zugunsten kollektiver Ziele geht. Das Buch kommentiert die politische Soziologie, die moralische Ressourcen als Basis des Sozialstaats sieht, und erweitert sie mit Ergebnissen der ökonomischen Institutionentheorie. Anhand der idealtypischen Unterscheidung zwischen Sozialversicherungs- und Umverteilungsfunktion des Sozialstaats wird dessen Wertbedarf genauer lokalisiert und Einkommensumverteilung als die solidarische Dimension diskutiert, da hier 'die Belange der Anderen' berücksichtigt werden.

This study, the first of its kind in English, sets out to analyse literature as a form of social communication by considering developments in literary theory and practice in the German Democratic Republic in the Honecker era. Attention focuses on the changes in the discourses of literary theory and literary practice in a semi-public sphere controlled by an increasingly ossified political discourse. Key developments in the 1970s, hailed by GDR theorists as the point of departure for a new kind of literary communication in society, are carefully examined. The study then contrasts these idealised views of literature as social communication with practice and theory in the late 1970s and 1980s. In clear trends in practice (and, to a lesser extent, in theory) communication was perceived as being increasingly problematic and conflictual. The development from this sense of destabilisation to the rupturing in communication between literature and society, between literature and political authority and in literature itself became more salient in the 1980s as its forms and themes radically challenged the mounting stagnation of the discourse of political power. These conflicts are illustrated and discussed with the aid of detailed analyses of key literary texts and previously unpublished interviews with leading theorists.
