Paradigms Of Artificial Intelligence written by Achim G. Hoffmann and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-09 with Computers categories.

This book presents a new methodological analysis of two competing research paradigms of artificial intelligence and cognitive science-the symbolic versus the connectionist paradigms. Providing an accessible introduction to the fundamentals of both paradigms, the book derives new objectives for future research that will help to integrate aspects of both areas to obtain more powerful AI techniques and to promote a deeper understanding of cognition.

Connectionism in Context aims to broaden and extend the debate concerning the significance of connectionist models. The volume collects together a variety of perspectives by experimental and developmental psychologists, philosophers and active AI researchers. These contributions relate con- nectionist ideas to historical psychlogical debates, e.g., over behaviourism and associationism, to develop- mental and philosophical issues. The result is a volume which addresses both familiar, but central, topics such as the relation between connectionism and classical AI, and less familiar, but highly challenging topics, such as connectionism, associationism and behaviourism, the dis- tinction between perception and cognition, the role of en- vironmental structure, and the potential value ofconnec- tionism as a means of "symbol grounding". The nine essays have been written with an interdisciplinary audience in mind and avoid both technical jargon and heavy mathematics.

Artificial Intelligence written by F. H. George and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-15 with Psychology categories.

Originally published in 1986, in order to probe, dispute and analyse the role of artificial intelligence in cybernetic thought and information science, the author pursues this topic within its philosophical, behavioral and neurophysiological contexts, while drawing attention to cognitive issues. By elucidating the problems and potential associated with knowledge-based systems, the book emphasized the need to examine artificial intelligence in its own right.

An important collection of studies providing a fresh and original perspective on the nature of mind, including thoughtful and detailed arguments that explain why the prevailing paradigm - the computational conception of language and mentality - can no longer be sustained. An alternative approach is advanced, inspired by the work of Charles S. Peirce, according to which minds are sign-using (or `semiotic') systems, which in turn generates distinctions between different kinds of minds and overcomes problems that burden more familiar alternatives. Unlike conceptions of minds as machines, this novel approach has obvious evolutionary implications, where differences in semiotic abilities tend to distinguish the species. From this point of view, the scope and limits of computer and AI systems can be more adequately appraised and alternative accounts of consciousness and cognition can be more thoroughly criticised. Readership: Intermediate and advanced students of computer science, AI, cognitive science, and all students of the philosophy of the mind.

This book constitutes, together with its companion, LNCS 2085, the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Work-Conference on Artificial and Natural Neural Networks, IWANN 2001, held in Granada, Spain, in June 2001. The 200 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the proceedings. The papers are organized in sections on foundations of connectionism, biophysical models of neurons, structural and functional models of neurons, learning and other plasticity phenomena, complex systems dynamics, artificial intelligence and congnitive processes, methodology for nets design, nets simulation and implementation, bio-inspired systems and engineering, and other applications in a variety of fields.
