Mathematical Reasoning written by Lyn D. English and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-03 with Education categories.

How we reason with mathematical ideas continues to be a fascinating and challenging topic of research--particularly with the rapid and diverse developments in the field of cognitive science that have taken place in recent years. Because it draws on multiple disciplines, including psychology, philosophy, computer science, linguistics, and anthropology, cognitive science provides rich scope for addressing issues that are at the core of mathematical learning. Drawing upon the interdisciplinary nature of cognitive science, this book presents a broadened perspective on mathematics and mathematical reasoning. It represents a move away from the traditional notion of reasoning as "abstract" and "disembodied", to the contemporary view that it is "embodied" and "imaginative." From this perspective, mathematical reasoning involves reasoning with structures that emerge from our bodily experiences as we interact with the environment; these structures extend beyond finitary propositional representations. Mathematical reasoning is imaginative in the sense that it utilizes a number of powerful, illuminating devices that structure these concrete experiences and transform them into models for abstract thought. These "thinking tools"--analogy, metaphor, metonymy, and imagery--play an important role in mathematical reasoning, as the chapters in this book demonstrate, yet their potential for enhancing learning in the domain has received little recognition. This book is an attempt to fill this void. Drawing upon backgrounds in mathematics education, educational psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and cognitive science, the chapter authors provide a rich and comprehensive analysis of mathematical reasoning. New and exciting perspectives are presented on the nature of mathematics (e.g., "mind-based mathematics"), on the array of powerful cognitive tools for reasoning (e.g., "analogy and metaphor"), and on the different ways these tools can facilitate mathematical reasoning. Examples are drawn from the reasoning of the preschool child to that of the adult learner.

This book demonstrates how an improved strategic management approach, leveraging established management concepts in conjunction with the innovative technology solutions offered by business intelligence, can lead to better performance. It presents the three main barriers to effective strategy execution and explains how they can be overcome. Creating a shared understanding of the strategy at all levels of the organization using a Value ScorecardTM and following the Strategic Alignment ProcessTM allow organizations to measure and monitor performance. Strategic Alignment Remote ControlTM is presented as the ultimate tool for managers to remain in control of their business. Seven case studies from different industries across the globe provide examples of how the organizational performance can be improved. They include companies like Daimler, Tetra-Pak, Würth, Germany's Federal Employment Agency, the city of Aix-Les-Bains, and Giesecke & Devrient. Additional examples from organizations like Disney, Marriott, Volkswagen, Avis, FedEx, and Harrahs help to demonstrate how applying the concepts introduced adds unique value. The second edition of this book has been updated and improved. Additionally it includes a separate section on decision-making under uncertainty and the results of a survey on the adoption of business intelligence.

* What roles do hospitals play in the health care system and how are these roles changing? * If hospitals are to optimize health gains and respond to public expectations, how should they be configured, managed, and sustained? * What lessons emerge from experiences of changing hospital systems across Europe? Hospitals of the future will confront difficult challenges: new patterns of disease, rapidly evolving medical technologies, ageing populations, and continuing budget constraints. This book explores the competing pressures facing policymakers across Europe as they struggle to respond to these complex challenges. It argues that hospitals, as part of a larger health system, should focus on enhancing health outcomes while also responding to public expectations. Adopting a cross-national, cross-disciplinary perspective, the study assesses recent evidence on the factors driving hospital reform and the strategies used to improve organizational performance. It reviews the evidence from eastern as well as western Europe and combines academic research with real-world policy experience. It looks at the role of hospitals in enhancing health rather than simply processing patients. The book concludes that hospitals cannot be managed in isolation from society and the wider health system, and that policymakers have a responsibility to define the broader health care goals that hospitals should strive to meet. Hospitals in a Changing Europe synthesizes current evidence in a readable and accessible form for all practitioners, policy-makers, academics and graduate level students concerned with health reform.

Governing The Health Care State written by Michael Moran and has been published by Manchester University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Cross-Cultural Comparison categories.

This book represents the first comparative study of how health policy is made in leading industrial nations. Using detailed case histories of the UK, the US and Germany, it shows that health care systems and modern states are indissolubly bound together. The author explains how the health care state originated before the rise of democracy, and demonstrates that it has had to confront the twin pressures of democratic politics and competitive capitalism. It focuses on three important arenas of health care politics--the government of consumption, the government of doctors, and the government of medical technology--and illustrates how these three arenas intersect.
