Das Instrumentarium, überwiegend für diese systematische Untersuchung entwickelt, umfasst ca. 100 Kriterien zu Formulierung, Struktur und Inhalt von Anleitungen. Die Ergebnisse sind in 268 Tabellen dargestellt und mit einer Beispielsammlung versehen (Anhang, CD). Die vier Textsortenvarianten gewinnen damit umfassend Profil. In 76 Diagrammen wird die kontrastive Dimension anschaulich: das Locale, dessen Beachtung, auch jenseits der Translation, wesentlich zum Erfolg interkultureller Kommunikation beiträgt, nimmt Gestalt an. Mit kontrastiven Textsortenvariantenprofilen dieser Art können daher sowohl Übersetzungs- als auch Fremd- bzw. Fachsprachendidaktik überaus gewinnbringend arbeiten.

A collection of essays that span many regions and cultures, by an award-winning historian Sanjay Subrahmanyam is becoming well known for the same sort of reasons that attach to Fernand Braudel and Carlo Ginzburg, as the proponent of a new kind of history - in his case, not longue durée or micro-history, but 'connected history': connected cross-culturally, and spanning regions, subjects and archives that are conventionally treated alone. Not a research paradigm, he insists, it is more of an oppositionswissenschaft, a way of trying to constantly break the moulds of historical objects. Translation, interpreting and translatology face major challenges today, as new technologies provide new ways of investigating our profession, analysing the process of performing these acts of linguistic mediation, or the outcome of our work, and even permit a fresh look at old data. However, aside from a certain improvement in terms of research possibilities, what else does the future hold for translation and interpreting? This volume proposes the label Translation 4.0, suggesting that contemporary translation should actually be understood as programmatic as expressions such as Industry 4.0 and Internet 4.0, which are often used to refer to the increasing application of Internet technology to facilitate communication between humans, machines and products. As the book shows, Translation 4.0 is at least undergoing a process of formation, if it is not already fully developed. The contributions here not only look into developments in translation and interpreting per se, but also explore the consequences of digitalisation for research in this field.

Popular and multimodal forms of cultural products are becoming increasingly visible within translation studies research. Interest in translation and music, however, has so far been relatively limited, mainly because translation of musical material has been considered somewhat outside the limits of translation studies, as traditionally conceived. Difficulties associated with issues such as the 'musicality' of lyrics, the fuzzy boundaries between translation, adaptation and rewriting, and the pervasiveness of covert or unacknowledged translations of musical elements in a variety of settings have generally limited the research in this area to overt and canonized translations such as those done for the opera. Yet the intersection of translation and music can be a fascinating field to explore, and one which can enrich our understanding of what translation is and how it relates to other forms of expression. This special issue is an attempt to open up the field of translation and music to a wider audience within translation studies, and to an extent, within musicology and cultural studies. The volume includes contributions from a wide range of musical genres and languages: from those that investigate translation and code-switching in North African rap and rai, and the intertextual and intersemiotic translations revolving around Mahler's lieder in Chinese, to the appropriation and after-life of Kurdish folk songs in Turkish, and the emergence of rock'n roll in Russian. Other papers examine the reception of Anglo-American stage musicals and musical films in Italy and Spain, the concept of 'singability' with examples from Scandinavian languages, and the French dubbing of musical episodes of TV series.
