In KZ-syndroom reconstrueert Heimans, samen met Dirk Verhofstadt het verhaal van zijn ouders, beiden kampoverlevers. Het resultaat is een even goed gedocumenteerd als emotioneel relaas over littekens die nooit verdwijnen en een waarschuwing tegen het gevaar van extreemrechts. KZ-syndroom is het postconcentratiekampsyndroom, een vorm van posttraumatischestressstoornis. Het doet zich voor bij mensen die in de kampen leefden onder voortdurende bedreiging van de dood of verminking. Ze kenden na de bevrijding intense angsten, nachtmerries en pijn. Hun emotionele wonden worden soms overgedragen op volgende generaties. De ouders van Henri Heimans waren tijdens de oorlog elk actief in het verzet. Ze werden door de Gestapo opgepakt, gemarteld en gedeporteerd. Zijn Joodse vader doorstond Breendonk, Auschwitz en een dodentocht naar Ebensee. Zijn moeder, een talentrijke violiste, kwam zwaar beschadigd terug uit Ravensbrück en kreeg dan nog de gruwelijke dood van haar eerste man, actief in het Joodse verzet, te verwerken. Pas na de bevrijding ontmoetten ze elkaar. Zij leed aan het KZ-syndroom, met zware migraines, angsten en suïcidepogingen. De Pano-reportage over Schild & Vrienden waarin Dries Van Langenhove en zijn medestanders de Holocaust bagatelliseerden, raakte Heimans diep. Hij legde klacht neer wegens negationisme. Hij voert strijd voor de mensenrechten en tegen haatzaaierij en racisme. Samen met Dirk Verhofstadt reisde Heimans door Europa naar de kampen en andere plekken waar zijn ouders terechtkwamen. Het resultaat is een beklijvende zoektocht en tegelijk een waarschuwing voor het gevaar van extreemrechts.

In the 1960s, it became clear that survivors of the concentration camps had developed psychological complaints. They were diagnosed with KZ-syndrome. Dutch psychiatrist Jan Bastiaans used LSD in his psychotherapeutic sessions with KZ-syndrome sufferers, who said they greatly benefitted from his treatment. This was, despite criticism from medical professionals, enough proof for journalists, regardless of their signature, to defend the drug’s usage. Without the newspapers, LSD probably would have disappeared quickly as a medical tool. Over time, paradoxically, the cause-related diagnosis KZ-syndrome came to encompass more than just Holocaust survivors: soldiers, hostages, survivors of the Japanese camps, and the children of Dutch national socialists were all eventually included within the concept. It resulted in an enormous rise in patient numbers, and a blurring and eventual disappearance of the concept. This book explores the contribution of Dutch newspapers to the historical-cultural phenomenon of this rising focus on victims and victimhood, without which the later acceptance of PTSD – a symptom-related diagnosis – could not be understood.

This unique research bibliography is offered in honor of Leo Eitinger of Oslo, Norway. Dr. Eitinger fled to Norway in 1939, at the start of the World War II. He was caught and deported to Auschwitz, where, among others, he operated on Elie Wiesel who has written the foreword to this volume. After the war, Eitinger became a pioneering researcher on a subject from which many shied away. His contributions to understanding of the experience of massive psychological trauma have inspired others to do similar work. His many books and papers are listed in this special volume of the acclaimed bibliographic series edited by Israel W. Charny of The Institute on the Holocaust and Genocide in Jerusalem. In order to acquaint users of this bibliography with the topic, two introductory articles are offered. The first is titled "Survivors and Their Families" and deals with the impact of the Holocaust on individuals. The second, "Psychiatry and the Holocaust," examines the general impact of the Holocaust on the field of psychiatry. Robert Krell writes that in general the psychiatric literature has reflected critically on the survivor due to preconceived notions held by many mental health professionals. For many years, the exploration of victims' psychopathology obscured the remarkable adaptation made by some survivors. The problems experienced by survivors and possible approaches to treatment were entirely absent from mainstream psychiatric textbooks such as the Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Fifty years of observations about survivors of the concentration camps and other survivors of the Holocaust (in hiding, as partisans, in slave labor camps) has provided a new body of medical and psychiatric literature. This comprehensive bibliography contains a plethora of references to significant pieces of literature regarding the Holocaust and its effects on survivors. It will be of inestimable value to physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers, along with historians, sociologists, and Holocaust studies specialists.

The term complex trauma refers to a broad range of symptoms resulting from exposure to prolonged or repeated severely traumatizing events.
